steering wheel interchange?

Post by carnut »

Does anyone know if it is possible to replace a early 1967 steering wheel with one from a 1967 1/2? There is a 67 1/2 on ebay and outside of the front hub they look similar, with the 67 1/2 of course, being safer. Just wondering.

The 1965 - 1967 1600 steering wheels are the same as the 1967.5 steering wheel. The horn button is the only difference and if you use the whole assembly, the interchange. The safety difference is negligible. The only real safety improvement (if you can call it that) is that it is black rather than chrome. If you are concerned about a bruise from the chrome ring, remember that both wheels bolt to the solid steel steering column (some folks call it the death spear...)

If your wheel and button are ratty, that would be a quick way to improve the cosmetics. As an aside, the early wheels will bolt to the later cars for an improved (in my opinion) look. The 3 seat 1500 steering wheel will NOT work on the later cars without some substantial mods. The 2 seat 1500 wheel I am not sure of...

Enjoy!
