Steering column and safety

Post by Ivin »

Hi All-

Has anyone out there with an early vehicle ever switched out their steering column to use a later collapsible type column? My instincts make me feel that it would be a little safer.

Thanks in advance

RE:Steering Column

Ivin,

This has been discussed before on the "roadster list". I do not recall all that is involved. I am pretty sure there needs to be an adapter to go from the later steering column to the early steering box. I am cheating and replacing the entire early frame with a later '69 2 liter frame. That way I get the rear axle brace, later steering box and the collapsible steering column.

Glad to hear your back is getting better.

Pat in Texas is doing this. As I recall, the dash has to be modified to fit the column. There should not need to be an adaptor if you get a 68 or early 69 column as they had the early steering box (sorry Steve - you could have done it easier...) and should bolt up. The turn signals have to be sorted due to the larger diameter column assembly (the early ones won't fit). Ignition switch issues are there too (if you want to keep the column lock.) It can all be done - just depends on how bad you want to do it....

I will likely keep my "death spear" in place.
