Hey there, I have a 67.5 1600 and I am going to install a new ignition switch. I was wondering if there was any other way to install the new switch without taking off the entire dash? It seems like that’s the only way. Thanks!

No easy way that i could figure out when i did mine recently. Out of frustration, I wound up cutting away the cage around the switch and then using a dremel to cut the old switch off. Drastic approach but it worked. I hope someone else can offer you a better solution. On the later models, the steering column does not run through the dash but under it. It can be dropped down to more easily access the fasteners. Also, if your old ignition switch is OE, you'll have to deal with the "breakaway" fasteners. A bit of anti theft overengineering for the early models when you consider how hard it is to access the fasteners in the first place.

When I stripped my car down I removed the dash first but I thought there was room to get to the 4 bolts that hold the lock to the column. If you need to drill out the screws, use a left-handed bit, you might luck out & have the bolts back out.

If all you need to remove is the actual switch, you may be able to get to the 3 small bolts out with the lock still installed.

A 3/16th /1/4 "" wide chisel you can use it to back out - loosen the shear bolts ,if you can access them

Best to leave the dash in and remove the driver seat, lay down a moving blanket. There is a sheet metal shield that you need to bend to get access to the screws, one or two of the screws are shear screws that you need to either cut a slot in with a Dremel cutoff wheel or drive it around with a center punch. It can be done, I have done it myself many times. Be patient and wear eye protection.

How were you able to cut it off from the top even with that metal shield bent away?

You cut a slot in the head of the screw so you can use a screwdriver to back out the screw.
