Would a new MX-5 engine require a lot of fabrication into a 69 2000. I was wondering as I am building a 2000 and looking for a decently cheap (under 2500$) engine that wouldn’t really require a whole bunch of fabrication. Other than the transmission, through my research I haven’t found much that would go wrong. I imagine wiring might cause a problem because of how much newer a 2000-2010 era mx5 engine is.

No real idea, however having converted to EFI myself you will need to plumb in a high pressure fuel system, which will require a modified fuel tank or a swirl pot system which was my solution. Also, modern engines have emission controls systems that are very intricate to engine management computers etc that can impact functions as well as exhaust systems (hot catalytic converters, etc.).

You budgeted $2500 for the motor, let alone what it will take to fabricate etc. If you have a decent, rebuild-able U20 seems to me you could build a very nice, decently powerful engine that's well mated to the car with a 5 speed... throw on a set of aftermarket carbs and EI system (Nissan, 123 distributor,) and improve drivability and reliability and you may be quite happy. Just my 2cents!
