Late Model Gauge Upgrades

Post by 70-1600 »

I have been contemplating upgrading the gauges on my '70 1600. My stock setup is (left to right) 140 MPH speedo, 7K tach, multi-gauge cluster. Speedo works fine; tach is inoperative; multi-gauge cluster all good, except temp (sending unit needs to be replace, lead broke off).

I purchased a 7K electronic tach that I can use to upgrade the stock tach from mech to electric. I also saw on the Speed Hut website a line of Classic JDM Z style gauges. Thinking about upgrading to that look.

My stock setup:

Speed Hut JDM Z style mock-up:

The Speed Hut JDM Z style gauges doesn't offer a cluster gauge; this 3-3/8" quad gauge they offer can be configured close to the Z style.

What have other late model/high windshield owners done to update the gauges on their cars?

There are a few options.
SpeedHut as you mentioned have quad-style gauges to fit in the stock location. They can also make custom face if their off the shelf styles don't suit:

IMHO, the stock gauges are the best looking, so you can have them rebuilt or converted to accept modern input, GPS (if desired), better lighting, etc.
Jon Frampton provides this service.

A better example of refurbished stock gauges. Note digital trip/odometer:

Where did you find that Red ring insert for the horn button. Is it just round solid red rope material?
Thanks
