How about some sort of lock (and key) inventory?

Post by tjp »

Inventory via spread sheet or data base or what not........

I know that there are a lot of numbered locks and keys sitting in buckets, bags, tubs, drawers, (unharvested) doors, (unharvested) derelicts, etc etc etc.

I wonder everyone who has these bits would be willing to inventory and log their lock and key numbers?

I KNOW that this is a long shot ask, BUT, if we can even match one key with one lock, then that keeps usable parts alive and saves someone the money of paying a locksmith who knows how to key a 50 year old lock.

Numbered keys with no locks are a cool collectible. I have a few myself. But it would be so much more cool to match that key to a lock.

cheers

There a locksmith tool adjustable they stick in the lock and get the pins opening setting to cut the key , it's kind of an art form to master it
My guy takes off the cap spreads all pins back then can see the wear pattern to guess the code

There are key catalogs that old time locksmiths have that they cut the key according to the Key number. A copy of those pages pertaining to 63-70 Datsuns would be beneficial.

Shifty has all of the key codes and has the ability to make matched key and lock sets. Apparently he’s on here even less than I am these days..Who knew Spec Miata racing would pull me away from Roadsters.

OK, please don't take this the wrong way. I see your post from days gone by, but you didn't try very hard.

Does the site admin have the ability to add a data base or what not for locks and keys?

Tjp, it was met with tepid interest at best. I've had enough people bash me for things that I've tried to do, I'm not going to go out of my way to try to push an issue when there's not much interest

Personally, I use a spreadsheet to keep track of mine. It's a bit of a task, but the satisfaction of finding a match is worth it. Saved me some locksmith bucks too.
