Completed KA24DE Swap

“Don’t get it right, get it running.” That’s the mantra right!
Well, some fine tuning left to do, and PLENTY of cosmetic work to come.
But the KA is in, running, and the smiles per gallon are great!

I’ll add more to this thread. This swap has been done countless times, so I probably won’t have much to offer that hasn’t already been posted to this site over the years.

But I gotta say I’m happy with the swap, and the U20 will be going into a project ‘64 with Solex.

Are the headers off-the-shelf, or custom?
Is the alternator tucked on the DS or PS, and with what brackets?

Congratulations! It's extra effort to swap in a FI engine vs carbs... did you install the pump in the tank or use an external tank like I did? Now that I have a quality Bosch fuel pump it's a lot quieter. Fun stuff!

I’ll get pictures of the alternator.

But the fuel pump/ and placement is WAY too loud. So I’ll need to remedy that right away. What Bosch did you go with?

A REAL Bosch 044, and I say REAL because there are knock offs out there and cheaper substitutes that have not cut it (I had to limp my car home a couple miles at a time once with a failing pump). That pump was a $50 EBay type purchase. It was a loud whiner and lasted about 8 months... it started crying louder on the way home from a mountain trip before losing pressure. I did research on Bosch pumps and learned about knockoffs and how close they are, and there's info out there for you to see what the signs are. Bought a real one at a decent price (I'll see if I can find from who... likely Amazon or EBay but a reputable dealer). This pump is much quieter. If you look up my posts on converting to EFI you will see what it's in (swirl tank) and where. I don't know what it would sound like outside the swirl tank. Some say 044s are loud, but mine is not. Heat in the pump and the fuel can be an issue. We may want to discuss this. Also, others have converted to FI engines like yours and I wonder how they set the fuel system up... in tank, swirl or bolted to the frame rail!

As an aside, after the limp home ordeal I now carry an emergency pump, another new but cheap substitute that would easily do the job short term should something ever happen to the Bosch. I don't do stranded! She's always gotten me home!

I went with an in-tank solution --- for temperature and for noise. This model includes a baffled tray which allows you to go EFI without worry of starvation during cornering or launching (even with a stock fuel tank (although mine is a car-specific aftermarket aluminum tank)). If you add an access cover in the trunk floor for this pump, it's very serviceable and without being under the car.

So I'm doing a KA24De as well with SDS engine management. What did you do oil filter wise for clearance? I've machined up an adapter to run a remote one but I'm considering building a new oil filter mount that points downward instead of sideways to keep things more simple.

My KA24DE oil filter sits about 3/8" above the frame rail in my 1966. It's snug for sure.

If you get the downward adapter figured out, let me know. Otherwise, I plan to go for a relocation kit to the fender well between the door and wheel (with protective fender liners in place).

Oh I'll figure it out. It will be a bit as I'm knee deep in getting all the frame work finished. Moving the rear leafs in an inch for more clearance as well. The shell is getting all the sheet metal and prep work done at my friends shop, frame is at my place. Plan is to have this in paint over the summer. Once I have the frame ready I'll be working on that oil adapter. I attached the one I machined and anodized in my shop if that helps.

Also. If you plan to run your air intake out in front of the radiator, if be happy to make a second one piece support brace that includes the MAF mount, see pics.

Thanks but I'm good there. Looks like I've done the same sort of thing as you to get to the front side of the radiator. My engines a bit lower than yours I suspect which is why I have this clearance issue. No biggie.

Did you find radiator hoses that route properly? I'm still mocked up with various segments and would prefer pre-made hoses if they exist.

I plan to build another set of engine mounts later this year, to move the engine towards PS about 3/8. When I do, these could be available to you if you'd like. Currently, the exhaust manifold is 1/16 to the steering column - which I don't prefer ;--)
