Trailer specs for hauling two sr311s

Post by tig »

Finally able to retrieve my Roadsters from Pennsylvania and get them to Durango, CO. Both cars are rollers but non-driving.

I need to source a trailer. I know little about trailers.

What’s the minimum size enclosed trainer that will safely/ comfortably tow two Roadsters?

Same question for a non-enclosed.

I have a friend with a f350 who’s going east to west and is willing to do the driving.

The quotes I’ve gotten for a car transport co are so high it makes sense for me to buy a car hauler trailer I’ve always wanted but don’t really need… and then sell it at this end (maybe).

You might want to base your decision on ease of resale as well. Talk with your local trailer sellers or manufacturers to what sizes are most in demand. Keep in mind that you need a little room in front and behind each car to compensate for movement. You can use wheel tie downs to save room, so perhaps having an E-track running down each side of the floor will help.

With no bumpers on the cars, 24 feet is the minimum.
I remember when no one wanted the 1500s......

I'd try to find a trailor around you that works & the 1 ton can handle and offer the owner a
deal to rent it

Roughly $11K for a bumper pull open 32ft. $18.5K for an enclosed 36foot. It ain't cheep.

Since I'm a dummy, this means 24' internal space, not overall, right?

Good luck in your search for a trailer. That's a long haul especially for Two Roadsters. Happy to hear someone else is in Colorado "Durango" I live in Colorado Springs. Just over Wolf Creek Pass LOL! Are you doing a complete Restoration on one use both cars? I may have some parts you may need in the future.I saved a lot of my original parts when I did my restoration, which are in very good condition. If you are in Colorado Springs (4-5 hour drive) you're more and welcome to come by. Just 6 miles East of I-25/ off Woodmen Rd. mile marker 139.

Good Luck Bob

Correct. Watch for the front width too if you find a bullnose one. My guess is you’ll need a 28 ft if enclosed. A 20 foot flat can work since stuff can hang over.

Thanks Bob!

The full story is on Penny's build-thread, but the short of it is:

- My friend bought two Roadsters in 1989/1990 "to make one" (one's a donor for the other)
- He started disassembly and then gave up in 1990
- They've been sitting in the Barn since
- They're now mine.
- I no real plan other than when I'm done it'll be the perfect Roadster for me (and I tend to not do things half-assed)

not sure if it is too late,
you'll definitely need at least 24 feet
enclosed might be tough you'd probably need 28 like mentioned earlier, open you're good.
you can build extended plates if needed too
that's how we did our trailer to get two down

I want to say each car bumper to bumper is like 12.7 feet.
As mentioned earlier, stuff can hangover on the open trailer

Got a guy a block down has a 5 vehicle trailor with a 550 GMC 6 wheeler hauls all over its RED CARgo in KC , I'd check on the insurance aspect that's important if you run into trouble
