'70 R16 cooling fan blade location referenced to fan shroud?

Post by Habitat.pat »

I have upgraded to a recirculating ball steering box on my 67.5 SPL, purchased a '70 SPL fan shroud & installed it. any information I've been able to find as to the relationship of the fan blade to the shroud says that the rear edge of the shroud should be at the center of the fan blade. This information is on general sites, not Roadster sites. I've seen a couple late SRLs that have their fans located where the entire fan blade is inside the shroud. Can anyone tell me where it is supposed to be located?

I am running an American Eagle radiator & the shroud has gaps to the radiator that I will be filling in but while I'm in there I can take care of the fan position if needed.

The reason I'm concerned is that I am in Texas & when I am at an extended stop light the temperature rises from indicated 190* about half way up towards the red. Some times after sitting like that, when I accelerate from the stop the engine bogs down for about 10 seconds like it's low on fuel in the carbs.

Thanks in advance.

Peace, Pat

Yes, Jon, new one installed.I have some muffler wrap that I might try installing on the back of the heat shield too. I’m planning on wrapping the header also.

At speed the temperature is fine, just not @ a light.

Thanks for asking.

Most cars the fan is completely inside the shroud , but likely for safety reasons as much as performance, make sure it's full of coolant best to position the 311 on a upslope and use a fill funnel that seals to allow fluid above the cap level.
And see that it holds pressure there's quite a bit of tubes/ hoses the pump can't pump air in those
