Electrical Gremlins

Post by jrusso07 »

I have been chasing this gremlin for over a year. It's a tricky little bugger.

Car is a 70 SRL

The problem is the right side front turn signal doesn't flash. The rears flash, the dash indicator flashes, the flasher relay clicks. All four corners flash when the Hazard flasher is activated. I replaced the bulb multiple times thinking maybe a intermittent filament...ran each bulb on the bench with a 12v supply first...Hmmmm....(actually much more vulgar)

When I disconnect the right turn signal lamp at the bullet connector there is voltage there. It rises and falls with the flasher relay. When I connect the lamp, the voltage goes away...

It is like there is no current available to the lamp load. I cleaned all the connectors in the harness under dash and the turn signal switch. No joy. I replaced the lamp assembly with a brand new one...no joy. I put the old one back in...still no go. But the hazards light all around just fine!

So, I use some choice words, pick up my tools, Wash my hands...check it one more time...the damn thing works! Son of a bitch!

My best guess is a almost complete break in the harness somewhere with just one or a couple of copper strands making contact. That's the best I got.

Any ideas?

Does insect fogger kill gremlins? :smt063

Sounds like a dirty 4-way flasher switch. Turn it on & off a dozen times or so & see if that fixes it. You may be able to get some contact cleaner into the switch or you may have to open it up, clean & Luce the switch contacts.

Thanks Pat, I will give it a try! I did activate the hazards a number of times while I was trying to diagnose the issue. Sometimes I get in and I drive the car and it works. Other times, it doesn't.

Yes, the flasher switch would be my guess also since it is pretty much the heart of the lighting system.

Bulbs are 1157s.

Drove the car yesterday for about 10 miles. When I started it the front blinker worked. When I got home it didn't. Activated the flasher switch about 10 times, no worky, did it again, no worky. Will have to pull the center lower/radio dash out and try to clean it up on the inside.
