The ring clip for the outer vinyl shift boot has driven me crazy to a mild degree for decades— no matter how I crimp it, it eventually pulled loose. Gluing the boot in place seemed too messy and non- reversible. Here’s what I came up with:
I got a bag of tiny binder clips from Staples, and clipped the inside of the boot all around the underside of the shifter plate. I either folded back the wire handles or pinched and removed them if they were in the way.
Time will tell, but the boot is in there way more firmly than ever, and still easily removable.

Re: Shift boot retainer ring upgrade
Thank you for this suggestion, now I will give it a go on my 1600. Just need to find the new shifter boot I put in a safe place to keep it stored out of harms way.

Re: Shift boot retainer ring upgrade
I recently installed new lower & upper boot on my 67.5. I put the retainer ring inside the boot & I think it came out great. I also used binder clips to hold it.

@ dnelsondesign
That looks great, good idea.
But, I must be missing something on how this sandwich is made. If the retaining ring is inside the vinyl upper boot, then how do you secure the vinyl upper boot and retaining ring to the shifter plate?
For some reason, I can't visualize this. Any further details are appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter
