Anybody know the size of the bolts that hold the door latches to the body pillar?

Depending on whether your car is SAE or Metric they would be 1/4" UNF or M6X1P counter sunk fastener

I should have mentioned the car is a 68 high windshield.

On mine I think the only ones that are countersunk hold the latch mechanism on the door itself I’m trying to figure out the size and pitch for the ones on the body pillar. There are 3 on each latch

The pillar latch will show if they are countersunk, my guess is they are but I was wrong once before, many years ago

I tried the 2 sizes suggested but neither fit

Hi Charlie, I just checked 2 x 68 and a 70 body for you. Definitely 6mm which is what was in my memory. (one of the very few metric fasteners on the bodies-almost everything is SAE).

67.5 and before were 1/4-28.

Suggest running a M6 tap through them, probably just junked up with paint/print/sand/grit. Should be a nice fit.

If the M6 is really sloppy loose, your PO probably stripped them and forced a 1/4-20 in there in which case you'll probably need to stay with 1/4-20 (bigger than M6) since Helicoiling the captive nut plates would be annoying. (not impossible, just not very fun).

Go easy, avoid stripping them-not fun to fix.

Thanks. Is it definitely course thread? 1?

Metric threads are different in the designation to SAE threads. SAE is number of threads per inch is the pitch and the higher the count the finer the thread. Metric threads are the pitch per a single millimeter so a M6 X 1.0 is a course thread 6mm and a fine thread is M6 X.75. So since the thread is finer its pitch is covered in a shorter distance.

Definitely M6. M6x1 went in easily on these 3 bodies.

I did not check M6 x .75, but that is a possibility too since that is not a very big difference in pitch. Might be worth checking, but it's a fairly minor detail.
