4spd Trans. question

Post by DAC21 »

I was gifted a working 4spd a while back from a guy doing an SR20 mod. I figured it was worth the $5 in gas and $20 "Thank you" donation. I know I have a small chunk of casting missing near the rear seal on my trans. so I figured I might need the Tail section and it has the 90 degree pinion and reverse switch so it was a no brainer to pick it up. It came out of a an early 1967 as is my car.

I was just noticing the Transmision mount, and it has the two threaded studs. I was looking at the reproduction early trans mount that Dean has (no studs) and the 1967.5-1970 OEM mount that he also has for sale. It sure seems the mount on this transmission is the later version. So it would appear a previous owner of his car must have done some mod to get the later mount to work? Am I sound in this thinking or is there something I might be missing?

Looks like the newer version to me Dennis. Probably just used the newer hardware to make installation a bit easier.

Dann has a write up on his Rallye site on how to use the newer version trans mount on early cars. It's a bit envolved including knocking out the studs on the mount. But I have never heard of how to go about using an unmodified new version mount. Certainly some mods to the x frame I would think?

I think that’s only if you do a 5-Speed swap 🤔 Maybe someone else here can confirm.

Dann's write up mentions that the 1968-1970 version mount (I just realized the 1967.5 mount is different that both the early and late version) could possibly be used as is if "ears" were welded onto the mounting plate. Maybe that was how the Trans. I picked up was able to use an unmodified late mount. If the late trans mount just dropped in on early cars there would have been no reason for Dean to go through the time and cost of reproducing the early mount. Oh well, not a big deal, other than having an extra early mount would have been nice. The reproductions are a bit pricey, but what isn't with these cars.

Well, the price of the transmission was right. If it doesn’t line up, and all it costs you is a new mount, you can still call it a win 🙂
