U20 Drivelines

Post by unklpat »

As our roadsters age out, we should all be thinking about driveline health. No zerk fitting, combined with no grease or years of sitting does not a happy driveline make. I've just been informed of the 2nd driveline in 3 months that will need to be modified to make usable. I am worried about mine.
Apparently, our U20 cars use a .96" 18 spline that is hard or impossible to get parts for. The local shop is doing 16 spline 1.25" conversions with zerk fitting using a 1210 series u-joint. I am curious if anyone out there has or knows where the stock style parts can be located.
I would also urge everyone to grease or check for play in their own. Pat

Sounds like this is right up there with going to the dentist and getting your blood pressure checked regularly.

You definitely convinced me to balance my 1600 5-speed conversion driveline before installation.

“South Bay Driveline” in San Jose fabricated a brand-spanking new one with a zerk fitting and better/common u-joints for me about three years ago; works like a dream. Cost me about $300 IIRC.

The reason stock ones didn't have a zerk was they are forged 4140 steel , and case hardened plated too it couldn't be drilled practical
The one with a zerk , are less substantial & rust easily on the outside ,we found just fyi
