I was so perplexed by this mounting method I spent an hour googling "alternate fastener locking methods" and similar search terms and came up empty for anything even vaguely similar. Very strange. I dont think the ring broke as the ends look clean versus fractured and the flat would not have bent around the ends of the ring if it was complete. Best guess is an attempt to side load the bolt...but can't find anything on the web that even comes close.

Looks like a clip off of a u-joint! The first thing PO picked up?

I think you are correct Soupy, it does look like a U-joint clip.

Got the trans broken down and only concern is the counter shaft 1st gear. Should I replace or is it ok? Whom sells these?

Could that 5th gear? At the back side of trans? While you are this far into this, also check 5th gear at the end of mainshaft.....is it splined or has it been welded? Getting that fixed now will save from doing this job again!

Well I’m going to get to that as well. Opinions on the 5th gear?

You have to look at the other side of the gear to determine which it is.

teeth damage and underlying cracks looks bad to me. i would replace it. Odds are you will have to find a used gear...I believe the Nissan part number is 32310-25500. Someone on 311s may have one.

Here's one for sale from one of our venders: https://datsun-roadster-parts.com/product/dt-266-c/

www.risingsunracing.com may have a used one...

Oh, sorry, I thought the gear pic was 5th gear. My bad. 32310-25500 is the 5th gear. I believe 32200-25550 is the counter shaft 4th gear. 28teeth

Anyone know where to purchase mainshaft snap rings?

Each one comes in 3-5 different thicknesses, you need to over buy them and use the correct ones for each location that you put them. Also there are I think 2 possibly 3 different diameters as well.

Thanks Dave, I just found a site that lists them by location and thickness options. One location has up to 5 different thicknesses. Looking for a castle nut now.
