NY Roadster Owners - check your registration

Hello all,

This post is mostly for NY roadster owners but it's an interesting problem.

My car's registration needs to be renewed next month. As I was looking at the paperwork the other day, I noticed that the online form had the car's weight listed as 4995lbs. It wouldn't really be a big deal except that the extra weight makes what should be a $30 fee into a $93 fee. I went to the DMV and they said all the cars in the system with similar VIN#s have the same weight. I'll need to take the car to a weigh station to get an "official" weight on the car before they will update it.

Any NY'ers with 2000 roadsters have the same issue?

Hey Matt,

I have (3) roadsters registered in NY. All came from out of state. I think I had to enter the weight when I filled in the registration paperwork but likely just copied from title docs I received from owner

70 SPL - 2000 lbs (but has a U20 now) - 2 year reg is $42.50 (from PA)
70 SRL - 2560 lbs - 2 year reg is $52 (from South Carolina)
69 SRL = 2560 lbs = 2 year reg is $52 (from Ohio)

I just looked on line and the curb weight is 2006 lbs

Thanks Joe! Yeah, the owners manual says 2162. We’ll see what the scale says. Not sure if/when that will happen since the registration is due next month and my car is torn apart since the dash is still in California until July probably. Might just need to suck it up and pay the $93 and forget I ever noticed.

My car came from PA also and I have a digital copy of the title but there is no weight listed so I have no idea where that number came from.

Er, absoutely... no... way.

My stripped down track 300ZX twin turbo is corner balanced at 3400# and it's huge and heavy compared to my roadsters. A 1990 Mercedes Benz SL-500 curb weight is 3968#. A BMW X5 luxury SUV is 4706#

Nope, nope nopity nope.

NY Historic registrations don’t include vehicle weight, though the old 1980s Texas registration showed 1980 lbs.

Historical registration ends up being even more expensive and restricts driving time and frequency. Both of those things I’d like to avoid.

To the best of my knowledge, historical or collector insurance coverage is the restrictive covenant, not the registration.

Yeah, got my car weighed with my fat butt in it, 2340lbs. Then DMV gave me problems with that measurement also. Had to email them a copy of a 1970 owners manual also before they would change it. They asked, "So what modifications were done to the car?" and then "well, there's no way we can drop 3000lbs off a vehicle for no reason." Showed them a picture of the roadster next to my Tundra and asked if they thought these should weigh the same. They said any car they looked up in the system with a vin starting with SRL311 was 4995lbs. I asked them to check SPL311's also to which they said "oh, I see some of those are around 2100lbs." They didn't quite believe me that they were very similar cars. Oh well, in the end I got the registration knocked down from $115 to $49 so I guess I'm satisfied for now. Hopefully future owners have no weight issues from now on (but I doubt it because the DMV is the DMV).
