oil spray bar for U20

Post by tangoterje »

Hi,

is there any documentation on a spray bar mod for U20 heads? I’ve read that BRE had one made, but haven’t seen any pictures or any discussions about it.

I have an oil spray bar somewhere. Not sure it is a Nissan one or not. I don't have any instructions though.
Makes me wonder if I have the head it came out of or if I have sold that. Hmmm.

RCMike responded to me regarding spray bars a few years ago and will have some knowledge. Pretty sure I was commenting on the one he had posted pics of on the previous Rock Vest race car. I had a problem with cam/rocker wear with my higher lift Isky cam in the past that appears to have been solved with VR1 Racing oil and a lube product by Hilton Hyperlube called Zinc Replacement (that doesn't actually have any zinc in it and does not interfere with the oil lubrication "package") BUT has since been discontinued (grrrrr, glad a bought a couple bottles, might still find some). Right or wrong, I'm now trying Motorcote after watching the Project Farm tests on YouTube. I have not run it long enough to know how it works, and I have plans to reduce the lift on this cam just a bit as it appears to be causing the (larger) valves to tap against the block. Bottom line, I was able to avoid having to work in a spray bar.

I will chime in on modern coatings to help with wear. looking into coatings like WPC would help alot. on youtube Moto IQ has some great videos on using WPC in there race engines and getting great results with high lift cam combos.

That’s exactly the way the factory ones were built. They tapped them right off the oil gallery in the head.

Original head oil gallery shares increased volume with spray bar? Or is it a higher volume oil pump?

Tilton originally made the spray bars for Nissan competition. The internal oiling for the cam should be blocked off if you install a spray bar so there is no increased volume needed.

If the internal oiling for the cam is blocked off then I would think that the size and/or shape, along with the location, of the spray bar discharge ports would be critical. Anyone have info or pictures of that?

Here’s a couple pics of the spray bar on my U20. Guy who rebuilt motor in early 90s acquired it somewhere, not sure where. I hope it doesn’t draw pressure away from the passageways that feed other points of lubrication. I have only put about 5K miles on the motor since the rebuild.
