5 speed speedo pinion gear assembly

Post by DKB59 »

I have a 5 speed with a 3.90 rear. Don’t have the speedo pinion gear and carrier assembly. Are the carrier assemblies available or will a 240z pinion assembly fit? I’ve read the tech wiki info on the different tooth numbers. It looks like I need a 19 tooth pinion for the 3.90 rear. Suggestions?

I believe the 280z/280zx pinion, sleeve & adapter will work.

Ross at sports imports can set you up he has gears and collars. I’m pretty sure he also knows which ones you need based on your differential ratio and tire size.

The Datsun 200SX / 720 carrier will work. For the 19 and larger number of toothed pinions, you will need the alternate carrier, which is offset for larger diameter pinions. These come paired from the factory as p/n 32702-58SNN, with the NN representing the number of pinion teeth, so for the 20-tooth pinion, 32702-58S20, or for the 19-tooth 32702-58S19.

Thanks all! Looks like the Nissan part number is still available directly from Nissan.

I recently bought the 20 tooth carrier and pinion from a Nissan dealer. To install it, I had to file a new flat spot for the locking tab, as it would not rotate to use the old locking tab slot due to the larger pinion. the new carrier is made of aluminum and is easy to modify. Works great now and is accurate to my GPS.

I’m kind of guessing at the 19 tooth pinion based on my 3.90 rear. This 5 speed trans is new to the car which is a stroked 1600. The car is not on the road yet so I have no baseline for the accuracy of the Speedo. I’m planning on using a 195-55-15 tire which is slightly shorter than the 185-70-14 that was on the car.

For reference, I run a U20 with a 3.90 and 205/60R14 rears and use a 20-tooth.

Is your speedometer accurate with the 20 tooth pinion?

Yes. It read more than 15% fast with the standard pinion. Now tracks GPS speed.

I bought the 20 tooth pinion and then realized that it won't work because the larger diameter requires an offset from center for the carrier to get it to match up in the transmission. I see the part listed above, 32702-58S20. When I search I can't tell from the pics if it is offset and will work with my '68. Anyone else had success with this part?

The factory 32702-58S20 includes the correct offset pinion carrier and 20 tooth pinion.

Thanks very much. I'll give it a shot.
