Re: Removing piece from center console
Just a guess but maybe there is some adhesive involved?

Usually not adhesive, but they have been in there over 50 years, so they need some persuasion. The plastic on the side grips them too. Keep at it, you'll get it out.

Re: Removing piece from center console
Peter,
There are small tabs than need to be un-tabbed so to speak and the panel should almost straight out. It will hinge a little where the top of it sort-of clamps onto the console.
.
Look closely, zoom in, and drew red arrows to the tabs. If I remember correctly. there were four tabs.

"Untabbed all the tabs"
It appears that the lock 'bezel' is hitting the bracket that is used by the retaining clip.
I've tried 'drifting' the bezel out but it doesn't seem to want to move.

Re: Removing piece from center console
Have you removed the locking mechanism? A thin U shaped clip should retain bezel. Pull clip, bezel slides out. Turn lock mechanism 1/4 turn then pull towards the rear, should slide out.
Once those parts are out, gently pull the whole insert assembly upwards. It should wiggle out

Yes. Doug is correct. It appears you did not remove the bezel. Good catch Doug!

Re: Removing piece from center console
The lock bezel is held from the back with a U-shaped clip, put in sideways. There is 1 clip for the lock assembly, and another for the bezel.

That would seem to be the missing bit - 2 u-shaped clips when I only expected one.
will report on sucess - hopefully - thanks all.
