About a year ago I asked Gabe if he was interested in developing brakes for the 311. Gabe is an interesting character, and maybe I rub him the wrong way, but after an absolutely not, he turns around and decides on the spot to pursue making a micro big brake kit for our cars! I left him with a complete spindle assembly that day. After much work with Kevin I have gone from test fitting, to installing one of the first kits to one of my cars that drives. I pulled off a set of volvo vented brakes for these, and I am super pleased with the results. The volvo calipers are getting recycled! Many thanks to Gabe, Kevin, and all the hard workers over at T3 for bringing us a great braking solution! Ive spent the last few weeks daily driving in the nice Sacramento Ca weather. The pedal is slightly more firm than an original stock pedal, but basically the same as the volvos.

T3 actually has 2 caliper models from willwood that work with their kit. It comes with a 3sq in willwood caliper. But I have suggested with testing that they be open to offering the 4.12 sq in caliper for those not wanting a firmer pedal or have larger than stock Master cylinders(like the wilwood 1"). This information is really for those that KNOW what they are doing with their brake systems. If you arent doing the math, please dont guess at what you need and get yourself killed or maimed.
If you do require a special sized caliper, contact Kevin at T3 and ask. Willwood calipers are currently in short supply so do not be suprised if the stock is exhausted and there is a wait time to orders.

I am not the vender, nor am I making money off of this product. I just wanted to share something I donated my time to, to get to market to fill my own selfish need for parts.
I hope it helps keep more of these cars on the road.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a great solution to dwindling Volvo calipers / overpriced 300zx bits.

That's very cool, thanks for creating another option! So far the "kit" I cobbled together many years ago (Toyota 4runner calipers with Maxima vented discs using a modified caliper mount) has worked very well and survived, but it's a one off, and I'm no expert so... This would have been an nice option!

Ray,

Thanks for initiating this project.

1. Did you go from the stock brakes, or stock to something else and then to these?

2. You only mention the pedal feeling a little firmer. Is this option significantly better than stock brake system in good working order, or is this something geared towards hot street/racers?

3. Will this option work with both the single and dual-reservoir master brake cylinders?

Thanks,

1. On this car, I had stock brakes, then I went with the Klotz vented Altima rotor/volvo calipers, and then to this. But I have 3 roadsters and work on customers 311s almost daily.

2. Your question is really a matter of opinion. Some people prefer a very firm pedal. Personally, I prefer something closer to hpw rhe stock pedal feels, but perhaps just a tad firmer. The Volvo pedal feeling is really firm, and if you have the rear drums properly adjusted, the pedal is going to be extremely firm. With disc brakes out back youll have the same pedal feel. How firm you prefer your pedal is really up to you. Most people tell me they prefer the hard pedal over the stock feel. But honestly most people thing mal-adjusted rear drums are the stock feeling!

3. This kit was designed around the stock MC and changing your MC volume and throw will require that you do all the math to figure out appropriate sizing of master and caliper... line pressures, input pressures, etc etc etc. Actually there are some great threads here on 311 regarding figuring all this out. This question is really impossible for me to answer beyond that. You can figure it out. And if you need a different sized caliper(piston size) T3 can possibly accommodate that. I have asked them to consider offering one size bigger and they tell me they havw them on the shelf if anyone asks. Big caution though. This is not something you just guess about. Brakes are no joke, and if you get mismatched parts on your own account. You are taking your own life in your hands.

Okay, but there were two stock brake master cylinders that were different sizes, exerted different amounts of force, and hold different amounts of brake fluid. Since your signature only mentions '68 2000's, I just wonder if you knew if this kit had been tested with the earlier, single reservoir brake MC, which is what I have.

...or maybe somebody else out there has purchased and installed this kit on an early roadster.

[EDIT] I also emailed Gabe at Techno Toy when I posted this. No reply yet. Perhaps after the Memorial Day holiday.

Thank you.

I ordered the standard kit w/ slotted and dimpled rotors. Yeah, the slots and dimples probably don't really do much, but they're sexier. 8)

Hi Ray,

Did your car have the stock rotor dust shields on when T3 developed this kit, or did you remove the shield in order to use this kit? I'm asking because the adapter hits the bracket on the dust shield where the brass distribution block normally mounts.

Yes, I've emailed T3.

UPDATE (02 Aug 2022): Confirmed that dust shield needs to be modified or removed.

Thanks,

I purchased these with great expectations, and was hoping to do a nice write-up. *heavy sigh*

First, I cannot say enough good things about T3. They've been over and above responsive and helpful. That said, I have run into multiple issues that I need not go into now. The key thing is:

"THIS KIT WILL NOT WORK WITH THE STOCK 14-INCH STEEL WHEELS!!!"

I have asked T3 to update their product description to clearly state that. I never would have bought these if I had known that up front. I highly recommend you request their fitment template before ordering.

Because of this and the other issues, I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do.

***UPDATE*** I added (3) 1/8-inch spacers (available from FutoFab) behind each wheel. That took care of the initial fitting and interference. Won't know if this truly resolves the issue with using this kit under the stock wheels until the car is on the road.

Very good information Pete, and your restraint is admirable.
Thanks for the posting this, and sorry for your frustration.

pete i have just installed some wilwood calipers on my car with help from bluehandfabrication. i have confirmed that they work on my 66 and 70. i live in vancouver washington and always need a excuse to go on a long drive. if you want to meet up and see the work bluehands is doing to make wilwoods fit under stock 4 and 4.5 wheels we can talk for a meet up.

Pete,

did you resolve the dust shield issue? I must have ordered the kit shortly after you did since it arrived last week. I am starting the teardown and I read your post. Where are you with it now?
Best,
Rob

Sorry....life got in the way.

I modified the dust shields similar to what another person did on the FB Roadster group.First pic is theirs showing stock shield (black) vs modified shield (silver). THe rest of the pictures are mine.
