I found metal lath at Home Depot that is cheap and a close match for original b acking material. It is zinc plated and can be left as is or painted black. A sheet is less than $10 and can make 3-4 backers.

Actually Herb Petty (Modesto Datsun Roadsters) was the "pioneer" of the 1500 grille swap. His swap seemed somehow more appropriate since his car was an early (medium flare) car....

The OEM 1500 grill mesh is about 6x7mm.
