How do you paint the rechromed datsun grill emblems

Post by GoldHawg »

I sent three of these out to the chromer when I was doing my chrome, and I don't know the best way to paint the centers black. What have others done? Please don't say just buy a new stainless one from Dean (which might generally be a good idea). I have these three done, and I'd like to take them the rest of the way.

never done it, but logically mask off most of it around the 'D" area, paint it and then gently buff out the raised bit until you hit the chrome.

I think the main concern would be the prep of the area to be painted so the paint will adhere to the chrome.

Looking on line shows that the metal to be painted needs to be roughed up some.

Please let us know what works for you.

I had heard of some that had some sort of liquid epoxy that you could fill in. Didn't know how others had done. The area is just so small and tight to get into w/a light sandpaper to scuff up.

I'd mask off what you can first, then spray a primer; use a sponge dipped in a thinner (maybe lacquer thinner) and lightly wipe the primer off the "D" and the surrounding part that stays chrome before it dries completely. Then either spray or hand paint the black and wipe with sponge again before it dries.
You have to have very little thinner on the sponge. Otherwise it will drip into the painted area.

I would prep the surface you want the paint to stick to. Then level the grill and pour paint in and let it level and dry. The part you don't want painted is higher. Does the area around the D have an arc to it or is it flat?
66 stroker, almost done.
67 basket case, paint coming soon.

clean and degrease after tape off and spray a couple coats of Duplicolor adhesion promoter, It's a clear primer that works very well on polished metals , plastics and fabrics
you can then use the method o painting of your choice , pouring and leveling is a good idea I would use the model car enamel satin black looks best

Have a look at sign lettering paint. I used it a long time ago on a Triumph emblem. Use a syringe to fill the depression.

There are also direct to metal paints out there...haven't used them

Hi Everyone,
I'm working on painting my 2000 grill 'D' emblems.

I'm well on my way with the first one, and it's looking pretty good, and then I saw this:

Well, if there's anyone who knows how to restore stuff impeccably, it's Michael @spriso. So, I'd love to see his thoughts.

Problem is: I did an exhaustive search of this site, but came up empty.

Does anyone here know where that post lives???

Thanks a ton, I appreciate it.
