Hello from Tucson, AZ

Post by TucsonJim »

Hello everyone.
I just joined this forum and hope to take advantage of what is obviously a wealth of information here.
I'm a retired electrical engineer who has been a passing good hobby mechanic most of my life. I have repaired or restored engines and vehicles from a 1955 Chevy Bel Air to a Case 530 backhoe tractor to several motorcycles. I had never worked on a Datsun until my brother-in-law asked me to restore his 1967 1/2 Datsun 1600 Roadster. It had been sitting outside in the mountains of northern Arizona for over 20 years. I am doing a complete frame-off restoration. I have spent the last few months cutting out body rot and fabricating, or buying, and installing patch panels (pretty much everything from the rocker panels down).
As I said, it is a 1967 1/2 1600 but a previous owner replaced the engine and trans with a U20 and a 5-speed. I have no history on the car, so I don't know anything about the donor engine.
The motor number is U2009471.

Can anyone tell me what year Roadster that would have come from?

It appears to have originally been painted an off white or cream color. Can anyone tell me what might have been the correct color code for that year and model?

Does anyone have a lead on the stock jack handle?

Is this the correct place to post these sorts of questions?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

Jim,

Welcome. Glad you joined us. Sounds like you are well on your way to getting the car restored. You can ask for parts in the Wanted section of the classifieds. Dann at Rallye Enterprises has a pretty good break down of the color codes for the roadsters.

What color??

Post some pictures in the Members Garage when you get a chance. Pictures need to be resized to post 640x680 is best. No mega pixel pictures allowed. Thanks.

Would be happy to post pictures, if I can figure out how. Doesn’t seem very straightforward to me. :(

Donor engine serial number suggests it came out of a ‘69.

It is not really that hard to post pictures here. They just need to be resized from the ridiculous mega-pixel size.

I opened a Flickr account and uploaded some pictures there. The link is:

Can anyone show me how to establish a link to there in Member Garage?
I would rather go this route than resize 250 photos :D
Thanks.

That great until flickr goes away and the pictures go with it. There is a ton of that in old posts. Nice metal work on the roady.

Hi Jim, just had some time and reviewed your photos. Looks like you're doing nice work! I noticed all the RTV on the engine... looks like an attempt to stop an oil leak that can occur there with the older head gasket, as the oil return passage is at the back of the head. Assuming the head is flat, the new gasket should fix that. Look forward to seeing how it comes out!

Everything, and I mean everything, is being torn down and rebuilt. Engine internals look relatively good. I will have the block and head boiled out and decked. New cam, jackshaft, rod, and main bearings, etc.

Wow, lots of work there eh? When I found mine 35 years ago it was almost as bad. At age 22 this was the third car I'd ever owned and had no experience restoring a car, let alone even rebuilding an engine before. But it was a labor of love and nothing was gonna stop me! I see so many things that take me back 35 years... and I'm still working on IT! Congrats on all the work! Our cars are very close cousins.

I feel bad about putting off changing my steering box, and you've rebuilt your whole body, etc. Amazing job with everything. I'd like to know how, or what you did on the horns. I truly feel silly worrying about all of the little things, after seeing your photo album. Amazing. Pat
