There is a way to check on the DMV web page if you have the plate and VIN numbers.

Next time over at the Brea Homestead I'll get that info. I'm just thinking "no record found"?? Worst case I think it would do well as a "parting" out car if the registration costs turns out to be, Judge, Jury and Executioner.

I bought a car from California in 2001 that had a lost title on a bill of sale and he filled out an affidavit of lost title. Had not been registered since 1986. Called and they looked the car up in 2013. I sent them the paperwork and for less than $100 I got a title out of them. Part of that $100 was because it had not been registered. Later I took it to the WA DMV and got a title.

Here in Missouri there's a abandon car titling ...like if it was left on your property and you get around all the regular title hassle.
I believe you testify in front of a mini Court judge and he awards you the car forms to fill out and wait on but not that $$

My car didn't come with a title, just bill of sale when I bought it in CA. Guy that sold it to me bought it out of AZ as a non-running project and that is the way I bought it. Hadn't been registered or titled in CA when he got it and records out of AZ were nonexistant (VIN didn't show up when run in computer either). CA DMV required a VIN verification at their office and issued tags and title to me on the spot after verification. Took longer for them to verify their own rules about the emmissions stuff having to be in place or not (thankfully they decided not as I told them it was a '70 non CA car so didn't come with anything and their manuals don't list the car anymore;) ) than it did to actually register it. When I moved to TN a couple of years ago transfer was seamless.

People offer a service where they roll the exixting paperwork/VIN through Vermont or New Hampshire and return it to you with a title in your name. Opinions vary, but if it was acquired honestly, I don't have any issue with it.
