little update... this took 3 hours on Saturday afternoon... I was so nervous to drill into my newly installed dash pad to fit the front twisties and mirror:

Image

With the dash and gauges completely installed, it was a challenge to predrill up from underneath. I tried a few different methods but what eventually worked best was a 1/16" drill bit in my dremel flex shaft that made a pinhole in the top of the dash pad. Because I couldn't drill from the correct angle due to all the junk in the way, the tiny hole would be enlarged from the top after locating the proper angle of the inserts for the mirror and the holes for the twisties in the sheet metal.

Using the drill bit in the dremel shaft, i could enlarge the hole in the vinyl and the fibreglass below fairly easily. It took quite a lot of time and nerves of steel to eventually get to that solution.

Then the second problem had to be overcome... how do you get the two washers and nut threaded on to the bottom of the twisty when you can't even get your large meat hook hands up under the dash through all the wiring and crap to touch the bottom of the threaded post? Well, a bit of rubber hose fitted around my socket to retain the washer stack:

And a flexible 1/4" socket drive extension shaft and lots of patience. Only dropped a couple of washers and had to re-organize and re-try.

Very satisfying to not have screwed that up for sure. Nice solution on the nut and washer stack.

Yes, great solution, I reserve the right to copy. I have used blue painters tape when it is in a spot that won't be seen, but this looks much cleaner.

Nice tip, I’ll put that in my “solutions” arsenal—-i.e. my forgetful memory. :D

Hmmm...that may be an oxymoron!

Update time:

Poor red bumper roadster has been sitting under cover for a year and a bit... time for some attention.

Pulled it out and went over the harness install. Removed the four year old gas from the fuel tank and fuel lines. Drained the carbs and this is what came out:

20230312_110252.jpg

Got a buddy over to review the coil and distributor wiring. He made some changes based on the Pertronix setup and the GM alternator that were installed before I bought the car. He removed the ballast resistor and added a ground to the GM alternator. He checked the ignition electronics with his current tester. Pronounced the car ready to fire with my installed used clean 67.5 harness I got from Ross @ Sports Imports.

Here goes: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vte0G_7OS50

The good: Starts and runs fine. Headlights work, high and low. Markers work. Fog lights work. Map light works. Taillights and brake lights work after I re-adjusted the brake sensor switch that was dialed way out. Dimmer and some dash lights work.

The bad: Signals do not work. Horn does not work. Backup light does not work. Temp climbs way up after running for a couple minutes. Have not actually driven as there is snow and ice on the ground here in Canada.

Still, pretty good for 3/11 day

Well, getting it running last weekend lit a fire under me. This weekend:

Installed door cards:

Old ratty custom ones from previous owner:

New ones (and clips) from Ross @ Sports Imports:

20230318_185504.jpg
20230318_190455.jpg
Found the reason my reverse light wasn't working... sender on the transmission had a broken tab and there was no 2 wire harness from it to the main harness connectors under the BMC. Shorted the two harness wires and the backup light works. Metered the switch connections and it functions correctly in and out of reverse. So I pulled the switch and tried to repair the tab to attach a harness to:

Unfortunately, my solder/mini screw repair failed when I was threading it back in... will either try again when it's up on the lift or get a replacement.

Reassembled the air intake, cleaned out the interior and put the top up for the first time in 4 years... it was filthy. Half-way through cleaning:

Backed out of the garage into the sun for the first time in 4 years:

20230319_131748.jpg

Dash together and working, except the fuel gauge:

20230319_131816.jpg

On the list for next few weekends:

- horn and signals not working
- wipers work, washer does not
- gas gauge not working
- diff leaking, need to reseal
- small oil leak, possible rear main seal

Then we get a road inspection and drive for the summer. Once I've shaken it down and sorted all the things, then we start planning for:

The car looks like it's enjoying that sun... that's what they're for! Congrats on all the progress, and I look forward to the CA18T upgrade! Those are great motors.

Small update:

Installed the door cards and put new lock pulls on... however, had no grommet for the locks. they rattled around in the hole cutouts. Bought a couple generic grommets from a big box auto supply store but they didn't fit and i didn't like the look.

Stopped at a body panel and fastener place, they had these which are bronze bushings for door pins:
20230322_173045.jpg
The 15-14551 were the correct size and fit:
20230322_173042.jpg
They fit snugly into the hole with a collar around the top:
20230322_172147.jpg
And the plastic lock body is a perfect fit in both up and down positions:
20230322_173104.jpg

I don't mind the bronze look either. $ 4.00 and change for the pair.

Now if I can just find an escutcheon finisher for my console lock:
