I am looking to change transmission from 4 speed to 5 speed. I have a 1966, 1600 - not sure what could bolt up without to much alterations. Any knowledge welcomed.

Most here use the 5 speed from a 2000. The shifter location is just slightly different and I believe you will need either another 1600 trans to bell housing plate or the thicker 2000 plate along with the 2000 drive shaft. Many have been done this way.

As noted above, you need: a 2000 5-speed two-piece Drive shaft, the 5-speed, Either two of the 1600, or one 2000 Trans housing plate, and a 5 speed transmission cross member. You'll have to elongate the shifter hole so you will need a metal cutting saw, and you will need a BFH to make a few strategic adjustments to the transmission tunnel. It can be done with some effort on a 66, swapping on a 67.5 or higher is pretty straight forward. There are several threads here that are step by step on how to get it done.
