Demand for reproduction Low Windshield cowl drain hose

Post by SABLT194 »

It doesn't look like anybody has repopped these. I'm curious what the demand could be for a well fitting repop. If these were made from 2 or 3 ply silicon I think it would be pretty easy. The tooling for this looks to be a simple piece of round stock bent to the correct shape. Then forming the silicon sheet and vulcanizing looks straight forward. I have no idea of the costs of tooling and low quantity parts run. Probably won't be cheap but not un-doable.

Your thoughts.

Steve

I would have bought a repop one if I didn't already replace mine with a "close" match. But I still need to figure out where/how I am going to get the end hose that goes to engine in a good spot that doesn't affect surrounding parts. In fact if someone makes a true fit cowl drain hose I will just take the one I have out now and put the repop in.

Nutshell: I'm in for one!

Just a thought, but maybe reach out to Gates and see if they would make a run with a slightly smaller outside diameter hose? The shape is close so maybe the mold they have will work? Gates is a huge company so they probably won’t want the hassle of a small run, but you never know until you ask. They may be able to refer you to someone who will.

I actually found my original cowl drain hose. Looks like it goes straight down after it Exits the cowl through the firewall. I'll get an estimate on tooling and a short production run.

That is good news. I will bump up for three from two. Surprised there is not more interest.

I will take at least 1. While my instincts tell me I should get more than 1, my wife's voice in my head is asking me why I need more than 1.

So, I sent an engineering drawing off to a manufacturer to quote tooling and a 20 piece run. We'll see if it's even close to being viable. I'm not looking to make a dime on this. If I cover my costs, I'm all good. I would certainly donate tooling to one of the vendors if they are interested in producing more parts for the roadster community in the future. I'm still kinda thinking it's a long shot. We'll see.

Regards,
Steve

So I'm wondering about the shape as compared to the too large diameter replacement one. The clip to hold the hose is off to the passenger side not in the middle so it is not dumping on top of the transmission.

Interesting, My car has no clip and I'm reasonably sure the hose on my car was the original from 1966. That is what this is modeled after. Also, don't the brake lines head over to the passenger side and create interference issues with a tube that would head down that way. If any body else has an original early "low windshield" drain tube that can clarify, I would certainly appreciate the input.

So, I took a good look at both the 67 and the 66 this afternoon and they both have the firewall bracket on the firewall engine side in the same spot. Me thinks this should work for 65-67.5 including the 2 liter 67 and the 67.5 1600. Will still take three.
