1840cc 66 Roadster Build
Not even close to being done with the 67 but thought I would start a build thread on the 66 I picked up out of Oklahoma. My plans follow:
1840cc build for 66 roadster
Engine # R 15770 3 main SAE
Std Toyota 5R 89 mm pistons and rings
1500 crank-acquired-need Std bearings
1600 rods-have-need Std bearings
ARP Connecting Rod Bolts-purchased JT
ARP head bolts-purchased from JT
Stroker prepped head with valves from JT
Hardened rocker from Stan
New push rods by Smith Brothers
New lifters purchased from Carl Jaeger
Will use stock rear end coupled with a 5 speed rebuilt by Dave P
40 PHH on modified pierce manifold-scored 40 PHH carbies-torn down-cleaned and will rebuild with Dave P's help
Purchased another Pierce manifold and JT's center linkage bits-will redo same as what we put on my 67.5 stroker
Stroker cam by Elgin--Dave P
Use H20 timing components-Motor Power-have-need to purchase an early camshaft gear as the motorpower gear is for a metric motor
Stock gauges refurbished
Simulated rosewood dash-have-installed
Frame is really clean and may have been gone through prior to someone pulling the plug on the project
try to clean up windshield
dashpad from Stan
need new carpet kit and seat upholstery
Need bumpers re-chromed and 1500 grill
Body parts-
Need front valance as it was folded back into the engine bay and is beyond repair-got one from Mike Y
Front fenders are both in bad shape-picked up fenders from Mike Y
Trunk lid-stole it for the 67-picked one up from Mike Y
Scored some two piece EMPI rims with the car. Looks like they will cleanup nicely.
Car was originally silver and was repainted green at some time. Plan to do a full body strip and go with Dodge Viper Blue for this car which is what my Z car wears. I really like the color.
Some pictures first of rosewood dash and EMPI rim and the rest as she sat in Oklahoma.

Re: 1840cc 66 Roadster Build
Hey we have very similar engines. My stamp is R-16055. I'm pretty sure I am going to pull my head off and take it to a machine shop. Do you suggest those ARP studs and bolts? Or anything else? I figured I'd ask since we have similar engines.

Yes, I would highly recommend the ARP head bolts.

Re: 1840cc 66 Roadster Build
So, Mr. P and myself have been busy. Got the block and the head back from the machine shop last Monday. All machine work has been completed. Block was hot tanked and checked over. Bored out for 89mm Toyota pistons. Pistons deck heighted to the block. Crank was checked over and polished. Fly wheel was lightened. Entire assembly from clutch cover to front pulley was balanced. We started putting the engine together last Saturday getting the block painted and the crank installed. Sunday we put a new gazebo up in Dave's backyard then we dropped the pistons and cam in place. Motor is coming together nicely.
Today I clear coated the head and the intake.
More to come.

Very nice, this is gonna be pretty! I like the idea of clear - I painted my aluminum parts block color (Head and intake) because I wanted them to be easy to clean. Did not think about clear.
"When all else fails, force prevails!" Ummm, we're gonna need a bigger hammer here.

Re: 1840cc 66 Roadster Build
Clear satin was a Dave P suggestion. Looks pretty good and according to Dave is easier to keep clean.
Did a little more work on the head today. Still waiting on valve springs so we can install the valves. Installed the water outlet nipple, new temp sensor and nut, 280Z thermostat elbow along with t-stat and gasket. The 280Z T-elbow gets rid of the darned tower and makes for a cleaner looking install in my humble opinion. I have a refurbed U20 Radiator I will be running. Installed studs for valve cover. Installed the new rocker shaft assembly I got from Stan. I chased all the threads on the manifold side of the head. Installed the front engine lift. Looking pretty good to me.
A couple of pics.

Toyota 5R pistons. 3 main crank with 1600 rods. Should be a fun ride.

Re: 1840cc 66 Roadster Build
So, trying to button up the newly built stroker motor and I am missing a couple of bits related to threaded holes in the block. Pretty sure they are BSP fittings from what I have been told. The pit cock valve on the exhaust side of the block got lost so I need to find a suitable plug to go in there. On the distributor side of the block I am missing the fitting towards the back in line with the oil gallery that feeds the distributor. There is also a threaded hole up front that looks to be the same size. Does any one have any idea what size BSP fittings I need? Not sure it makes a difference but this is for an early three main SAE motor. Thanks.

Re: 1840cc 66 Roadster Build
Got my missing bits sorted as I had a spare 1600 block in my shed that I had some how forgotten about. It had everything I needed so I was happy about that. My block had the lower stud that is too short for the newer water pumps. JT came through for me so I was able to leave that darned stud alone. I had visions of it snapping off and then resorting to using multiple milling bits to get it to where I could chase the threads. Been there done that and it is no fun at all. Looking good. Next up is the oil pan.
Still taking care of other issues before I start on the body of the 67. Lots of patch panels and welding there.

Yes, I am but it will be at least a year before I try to start it. Need to finish the 67 first.

How much did you lighten the flywheel ?....a lightened flywheel is still on my wish list, if I could just determine what the consensus, or recommendations are, for spirited street driving, with my Isky 266 cam.....
