Ortega Hwy Run Saturday 9/17 9am

Post by twinight »

This is an all makes run started by the socal evo club but was cross posted onto the swedespeed R forum. My "other" R is better suited for the twisties, so I'm driving the roadster instead. Meeting at the Denny's off Ortega and the 5 at 9am. Hope to see some other roadsters there.

Unfortunately only 3 cars showed up including myself.
No other roadsters and two Lancer Evo's. We left Denny's around 9:30, which by the way has very limited parking.
Ortega was crowded and the cops (4) were out in force. After a stop at Hell's Kitchen, we continued down the hill. There was a bit of traffic, but when the last car took the turnout, we blasted up to 70 with whitenuckle turns in 4th gear down to Lake Elsinore. Even with the gumball tires, taking high speed curves down a hill in 4th gear in a 35 year old car is hair raising.
We the drove over into Wildomar to Clinton Keith Road.
That's where the real fun began.
The roads are tight with dips and crests, many of which are blind. Many crests rise up and over and drops you immediately into a curve. Some twisted down some pretty steep grades that I wouldn't trust my stock roadster brakes on. The Evo's weren't pushing as hard as they could have and found myself able to keep up. I entered turns at the same speed, but they out accelerated me out of the apex. The speeds were kept to around 60 in the straights, but the speeds slowed down to 35 during the tight curves. There were evena few 15mph curves thrown in. I don't think my heavy R would do well, especially with all season tires.
The road is insane, and I will definitely make the next run there.
