The Quick/Small/(Stupid?) Question Thread-take 2

Post by S Allen »

The old thread was 311 pages and 4,000 plus posts. Time to start a new one.

Why we even have this??

Welcome to the Quick Question Thread. (there are no stupid questions)

What is the Quick Question Thread?
Do you have a small general or technical question that doesn't deserve its own thread? Well partner, you've come to the right place!

Why do we need a Quick Question Thread?
The main reason is to cut down on clutter on the boards. These boards are such a great technical resource for all us Roadster owners. This thread hopefully will cut down on the volume of single reply threads about stuff that has been asked many times.

Guidelines
- Have a small question that needs a small answer? Ask in here! Do you want to have a full on discussion of a specific technical topic, by all means start a new thread.
- Cut people some slack in this thread. We all know the link to the Wiki. If someone asks for Spark plug gap advice, don't troll. Just move on or answer their question.

Useful Links
Most questions can be answered here:
http://www.311s.org/pmwiki-311/pmwiki.php
Also, try you hand at using the search functionality of this board:

Hopefully the guru's will monitor this thread and help out, but you don't need to be a Guru to answer questions!

Thanks Steve! Nice to end the previous thread at 311 pages :) Can you (or one of the Mods) please copy/paste the following into the OP? Or perhaps there is new wording that someone wants to create?

So, I have a stainless hood scoop trim piece that one of the clips is broken. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to remove the broken one and replace with a good one without damaging the trim. Any suggestions?

TIA,

Pat

I'll have to look but it seems like I remember there is a notch in the trim piece that you slide the clip to and then remove it. I'll look for my spare trim piece this afternoon.

I can get the clip to the notch, pull the bottom out about 1/8", but not enough to release the top part from under the flange. Have used every 'mechanics' word I know! Do not want to force and ruin the trim.

My stock gas cap weeps a bit when the tank is full ... (when the fuel sloshes to the rear). Any tips on how to tighten the seal? Rubber in the cap is in great shape, but I feel when I tighten (to the clock-wise) it could go tighter, but bumps up against the stops.

Try fitting a spacer behind the rubber seal, fuel friendly of course :)

Gas cap spacer done...thanks
Sitting in traffic yesterday I noticed fumes coming from under the hood. Pulled to the shoulder & popped the hood. Gentle fumes the colour of steam were coming from the breather tube on my valve cover (U20). Same thing today and when I got home I checked the engine temp with my laser reader ... normal...What is normal for fumes of any kind from the breather tube?

Just a few thoughts and not complete by any means , but some fumes are going to be normal, it is a vent for the crankcase. So, fuel fumes might indicate a super rich condition where fuel is getting past the rings, or even leaking into the oil from the fuel pump housing (very unusual) or possibly bad intake valve seats. Antifreeze/coolant smell could indicate a bad, or going bad head gasket - might want to retorque you head bolts. Could also be a crack in the head/block somewhere - hopefully not! Oil smells, well that's normal, though a lot would indicate worn rings or valve guides perhaps.
"When all else fails, force prevails!" Ummm, we're gonna need a bigger hammer here.

I have a small question, had some literature that indicated the very early single carb 1500 came with a 462 rear diff gear, but all the data I can find shows 389 is my info wrong. I know data from 62-63 is sketchy at best

Set my oil drive gear this weekend, does this look correct? I know it needs to be at 11:25, this is the closest I can get.
