Does anybody know if a 1967 1600 has any fusible links?

Post by 111jag »

Especially from the white wire coming from the starter? And if not, how does one go about installing fusible links? How about installing Maxi fuses? (I believe that is what they are called). Anybody have any pics of fusible links or maxi fuses installed on their cars?

The fusable link is disguised as an amp meter. Installing about a 50 amp fuse in that line would be a good plan.

I don't have a picture, but I took the white wire off the starter and mounted to a Maxi Fuse holder near the coil....I did not lengthen the wire.
Than I ran a new 10 ga. wire between the Maxi Fuse Holder and the Starter....I used red because that is what I had....LOL

The Cars that I have seen with a fusible link have a 2 wire white plastic connecter about 6-8" from the starter....the fusible link is the connecting wire from that connector to the starter. Hard and dangerous to change/bypass on the Freeway during rush hour......DON'T ASK......

The ammeter pegs at +/- 30 amps. I'd suggest 35 or 40 amp fuse inline. Not sure the ammeter can handle 50.
Got one you want to test? 8). You can place to 20 amp fuses in parallel to split the 40 amp current if you want to go with
OEM type fuses.

Is this a good fuse to use? It is a 12 awg, however, I think the maximum fuse I can install is a 30 Amp. On a 67 1600, should I install it on the black wire from the starter? There is no white wire like I have been reading.

I would not go smaller than 10 awg wire.
There are online calculators for the voltage drop.
You need to use the length to the fuse box as you wire length.

I guess I would not want to use less than 10 awg wire because the original black wire is 10 awg.

Would it not be okay to put say a 40 Amp fuse with 10 awg and make it the same length as the black wire to the plug?
Can you use an audio fuse like this one? http://www.banggood.com/DC-12V-Car-Ster ... 75789.html
Not really sure how to use the calculator...

A CB is a good idea.
This is the Maxi fuse holder I use

No you cannot use an audio fuse. Likely the 40 amp audio fuse is peak power and not DC (Direct Current like the car is nominally)

I couldn't find a 10 guage at the store, but I did find an 8 guage inline Maxi fuse holder. Is it ok to hook it up to a 10 guage wire? At the same time I will make an entire new set of wires by attaching a 14 guage wire to the fuse block, from plug loops through dash to engine harness to horn fuse. Also I will attach a 3rd wire which is a 12 guage and make sure it goes to the Starter Solenoid? The 3 wires in the picture are 10, 12 and 14 guage are they not?

Will a 40 Amp suffice? The people here said 30 was to low and 50 to high. Now all I have to do is see if I blew the Ammeter or is it called an Ampmeter or Ampmetre? (I'm from Canada, eh). You should search the history, it puts it all into perspective.

I'm no electrical guy, but I would put a 30 in it. I would carry a spare or two.
