Has anyone done 17"s

Post by Mattk »

So since my project is on a baby break I've been thinking about wheels. The style of wheel that I like is not really available in 15 or 16's. So this is my question is:
Has anyone done 17's? I know it can be done. I would love to see some pictures to see how it looks to help me decide.

This is something I would like to figure out so that I can determine the width of the rx7 rear end.

Cheers

They have been done. I think they are just a little bit too much.. But then we all know I am a traditionalist.

I like 15 and 16. But the 16 is limited in tire choices, and tire prices.

What kind of wheel are we thinking of? lol

I think Roadsters "need" a certain amount of rubber to look OK. Super low profile tires just don't look right -- to me. I like the look of Alvin's car with 16's and would not choose any lower profile tires than those. I also like the stocker look with lots of sidewalls. Again, personal opinion only, yours will vary! :-)

What width tire do you want to run in back? I think that should be the deciding factor rather than wheel diameter

Thanks for the pictures Alvin. I like they way the 17s look. :smt003 The wheels I like are the Beyern Mesh wheels
image.jpg
Or the xxr 521 or 526.
I willing to go staggered but I want to have as deep of a wheel in the rear as I can. I just think these cars look better with a lip on the wheels (like rotas) and the web look is ,IMHO, timeless. So if I go 17s I will get a little of both worlds. Classic from the deep web style and tuner from the size. Which works for me being that I'm doing an engine swap. And before anyone jumps on my sh^t, yes I do understand that the Beyerns require a pattern change. Which is not the hard part...it's the bore I'm worried about. But I'm not going to get into that...it's a boring topic! :smt005

If you want a large lip have your rear axle narrowed......IIRC many of the RX swaps are being narrowed 1-2"

Got one! That's why I want to determine my wheels first. So I know what my offset is and narrow accordingly. This is also why I'm spending so much time on my wheel decision. I wanna do it once!

Alvin
I missed the end of the first post
What width tire do you want to run in back? I think that should be the deciding factor rather than wheel diameter
I would like to go as wide as possible to get the power to the ground. I'm sure I can get 8s in the rear with no leafsprings and no tubs (9s would be great). As for the front 7s are great. This is not a daily driver and there for staggered doesn't bother me.

That all being said
Bart/Chuck
What offset did you use up front and width? Did you have any issues with 3z brake clearances?
Thanks
Matthew

215X45X17 on rears 205x40x17 on fronts with custom off set rims, I had them rehooped
to tuck the tires under the fenders. wanted a lot of lip but settled for not rubbing.
