Soft top questions - 1965 SP310.

Post by Nissanman »

Hi folks, I'm slowly fitting the soft top to my little car and have a few q's.
On the front bow there are some holes which look to me like they had metal thread screws through the fabric: -
DSC00004 (Large).JPG
This one looks to anchor the side of the fabric to the trailing edge of the bow.
DSC00006 (Large).JPG
....and these two seem to line up with the fabric seam to anchor the fabric to the front face of the bow.

I know there are a heap of holes under the bow and the metal trim to clamp it all in place, but because the original soft top is so trashed, I don't know exactly went in these holes.

Were they self tappers and cup washers or what?

Also, where typically does the roof fabric sit on the front bow?
DSC00007 (Large).JPG
Does the leading edge of the "gutter" reach to the leading edge of the 1/4 window or does it sit further to the rear?

Any help is appreciated :? :?

Another new skill I have learned on this car :smt006

No, I don't think so, they are too high on the bow.

I spent some time looking for pics. on the web an it appears that the '64 and maybe '65, had a chrome screw fitting at the trailing edge of the bow, where the hole in question is located.

64 yes, because the bow was made of wood. I'm fairly certain that the 67.5 top frames have those holes. I'll look later

There is a metal line which is a top tensioner which I have never had on my top.
Suspect it fastens the hole in pic number 1.

Oops not so, looked at my top and it has a metal ear with a hole for the tensioner.

All I can say is, the the holes are there, I have no idea if they are original or not, nor what they are use for :(

I looked at a 65 and 66 top bow and they both have the holes in picture #1. I also believe they are weep holes.

I can't tell for sure from your pictures, but it looks like you have the 66 style. Here is a picture of the 65 with the front adjust bracket.

Here is a picture of the bottom of the 65. A lot of holes.

Thanks for the pictures folks.
I think I might avoid using the holes for any sort of fastener and stick to the holes under the bow.

My 66 has those holes also. I believe they are unused. That being said I'm kinda in the same boat as you are. I am not sure how everything is supposed to tie in at the edge of the bow and the tapped hole that's in the softtop frame up in that area as well. We really could use some close up pics of a stayfast top install.
