Question on painting a Flat dash in the car

Post by msampsel »

Happy Mother's Day to all Mom's!

Anyone painted a flat dash in the car and been happy with the result? I tried some 3M glue remover yesterday (not supposed to hurt paint) and apparently the no hurt paint claim does not apply to 47 year old paint (doh). On top of this I had a old shift cover I could have tried it on first (double doh!).

Maybe some of those foam paintbrushes? Mask off the important stuff - that will be the tedious part.

I used a Rustoleum "hammered" paint in an primer or off color, then coated it with semi-gloss to match the original (black). I was very pleased with the result.

I had contact cement covered by black velour from PO. I cleaned off as much of the cement as I could with isopropyl and tooth brushes leaving the original texture but discolored spots. Then I masked and rattle canned my dash (in place) with two very light coats of rustoleum gloss dark gray. It's okay for a driver. There is more texture to the final result than the picture shows.

msampsel you are not being pesky, I am just having difficulty posting my picture. I have asked S Allen for assistance and will post as soon as I am able.

Interesting you all mention black as original color, my dash has (for as long as I can remember) been a grey and not a black.
Like this one for sale on Ebay. There is also a darker (black) one for sale too

Which is likely like this new, (borrowed the pic from kenw's posting).
I'm in analysis paralysis land at the moment ...
Not sure what to do yet ...

Here is the other color dash glove box for sale on ebay or was it grey original and "chris" krinkle painted later?

Image

This is the picture that I referenced in my earlier post on this thread. Upper left hand corner of dash gives the best view of the texture.
