Stainless Steel Exhaust for 2000

Post by sfdaugherty »

I decided to replace the exhaust system on my 69 2000 and have been admiring the stainless steel muffler's, resonators and tailpipes built by JT68 on this site. Well, after a few PMs back and forth to Jim, I decided to pull the trigger. Some of you may not know that Jim will supply you with EVERY pipe and hanger you need to complete your installation. He will build you a 1-3/4" complete to your stock manifold in either stainless or carbon steel; he will sell you a "hybrid" system that will be 1-3/4" to go through the stock frame rail holes and then 2" from there; or he will sell you a complete 2" stainless system with the section through the frame modified to fit through the existing holes and to fit a header or Dean's flex connector (what I purchased).

Note: He included all the brackets neccesary to fit it to my car's stock bracket locations.

Here is a pic of the system I purchased for my car:

If you want more detailed pics . . . you can go to my photobucket site:

The only thing I had to purchase was a flex connector from Dean and 6 stainless steel lap joint clamps (from Summit Racing).

Magnificent quality and a great guy to work with.

I'm looking forward to fitting the system on my 68 2000 which is my test mule.

Shannon

I am considering polishing the pipes to match the resonator, muffler and tailpipe.

You will also need a mirror on your garage floor so you see it before going on a drive.

Thank you guys! These flow like crazy and don't sound like a domestic turbo muffler etc. Best thing about them from my perspective is they should last the life of the car....waaayyyy longer than plain steel no matter what. Even bigger benefit in wet climates and where they salt the roads! jt

I've noticed that many guys talk about the SOUND of an exhaust set-up as being important. I thought it was just for expelling exhaust gases..not so.
So is there an audio clip of the sound? I know engine, carbs, pipe size etc can affect the sound but still it would help to hear something.

pm'd on the Grill Backs. http://311s.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=20577" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So Linda, I probably won’t do a sound clip mostly because I’m too much of an audio dork. It's a personal problem. In engineer speak the issue with listening to a car exhaust on pc playback is the frequency response of a PC system is SOOOO bad and the dynamic range is even worse due to extreme compression.

Even if I made a very careful recording with a precision microphone, it would sound completely different to everyone who listened because each playback system changes the sound so much. Too much treble on some, no lower end at all on others, all raspy upper midrange on another, distortion etc, you get the idea.

A good example is hearing a Harley or a Rice-burner bike on youtube and then roll down the window next time one rumbles or screams by you on the road. One just isn’t representative of the other.

An even better example is listening to an old piston airplane on youtube. Go find a running P-51 Mustang on youtube and have a listen-sounds kinda like a toy airplane. If you ever get the chance go to a vintage airshow and listen to a real p51 start, idle, rev and take off..what an unbelievable, spectacular, amazing piston engine sound. Listening to a P-51 in person and one on pc audio file just can’t be compared, they just aren't even similar.

Good news is you should be able to hear some of these systems and resonators at Shasta and Solvang etc. since they are going on the very best cars and restorations. The 2" system is fantastic for KA and SR cars too!

Thanks again Shannon, enjoy the system!

I'm planning to have this car at Solvang this year so you can hear it in person.
