Complete interior redo

Post by Zedyone_Kenobi »

I want to order the kit Dean sells to redo my 68 2000.

I am torn, I have a black interior right now. BUT I would rahter have a saddle brown interior. Is it possible to get the entire kit, carpet, seats, vinyl, etc all in the same beige or brown?

Has anybody else went this route?

Some have done that, but I don't know what kits they used.

Original colors were either black or red.

Have a look at a car w/ a tan interior before you pull the trigger. I'm sure Alvin will post some pix shortly.

I know Dean doesn't offer it in a tan but might get his guy to make one in tan if you ask really nicely!

Tan has been done lots. I think most guys agree however that the black or red tend to compliment the car better... I am partial to the red which looks beautiful on a nice white car. Go tan, more likely to be mistaken for an MGB...

I am actually in love with the burgundy or red interior. But I cannot get the wife on board. She has a special love affair with E-type's which are composed of 11 cows all tan leather. I will probably end up going with Deans Black, but I wish I could pull off red. My wife has also fallen in love with the Datsun to the point where she feels like she its partially hers! Which is both a blessing and burden. She never attached to the Z. But in two days of ownership, she has sat in the Roadster 4 times! :)

I love it that she loves it.

Now I need to find the aluminum door panel portions, and new door cards to attach the new vinyl.

Thanks guys, you are all going to be sick of me soon. But I am going to make this SRL the best 68 I can build.

Nismou20 has a beautiful Red Roadster with tan interior. You can get vinyl spray paint also.

Which aluminum parts are you missing? Like I said in my PM - I have a garage FULL of parts - literally. I doubt after my garage re-arrangement last week that I can get another part in there...

Make sure and get the car warmed up and let the wife drive it. Preferably let her drive it with you NOT in the car. It might be a little stressful for you but it is a good investment in your future :-)

Red looks cool on most cars that are not painted red... Well, my wife said red (she showed me a photo of a BMW from work...), so black interior was the only option.

Seriously, going red is difficult if your interior was not originally red. Think about repainting the visors, interior trim on the windshield, dash, and that is before you get to the seats, doors, sides, etc.

Ok, I am not following you on something, You have brought up in this, and I recall some other post(s), that you are needing door cards. :smt017

Any Vendor kit you get has door cards, back panel cards, etc. OR, are you just planning on getting vinyl??? :smt017

The only problem with vendor kits are that you are limited to just red and black, which btw, are the only stock period correct colors for an accurate restoration. But the kits are pretty much plug and play. You can install all of it yourself without the need for an upholstery shop.

Now, regarding a tan or saddle, I think that would look very nice with a combination of black accents.

This is just my own opinion and others might go :Tosser: , but here is what I think would look awesome.

Tan door panels with black door tops
Black dash and window trim vinyl
Tan back side panels and tan package deck
Tan center console lid with the rest black
Tan seat covers with black bead for accent
Black carpet

I have in the past heard of vendors being able to accommodate colors other than the standard. There is no more labor involved, it's just a matter of using a different color vinyl. But I am sure there would be an upcharge for the hassle, but it could be done.

The other option is to buy a standard kit and take it to your local shop and have them take it apart and re vinyl. Maybe your existing seat covers are in decent shape so they could use those as a pattern

I'm not a fan of the upholstery dyes. I have seen them wear off on vinyl. leather is a different story as it is more porous and the color soaks in rather than laying on top.

There you go, my 2 cents.

Dean can get a kit in any color. He did one for me a few years ago, it came out great. Here are the colors

don't know the answer to the question, but unless everything wasn't the same color, would look weird unless there were contrasting accents in the car.
