68 datster in progress.

Post by Frisky311 »

By everyone.

I finally decided to make this epic journey into a build thread. So to start off I'll drop a little history on how I got the car and what I've done so far.

So I traded a dirt bike that I never rode for this wonderful beast just before my wedding just over a year ago, which made the to be wife very nervous. But true to my word I didn't touch it till after the wedding and honeymoon were over and done with. Shortly after however I tore into it with much vigor and absolutely no money. I pulled the body, checked all the drivetrain, brakes, and such, and discovered that I didn't have front brakes. So with no money to sort out brakes at that time i moved onto the engine. Pulled the 1600 and started tearing it down. Shortly after I started that I decided that I wanted to do a swap. So I started looking into options for that. Wanted a sr but couldn't afford one so I looked into the ka option. Found a guy that had everything to do a ka swap. Ad it was free, just go and get it. So I take an epic 24 hour round trip with no sleep or real breaks and get this engine, tranny and all the goodies.

Fast forward almost a year and I have the engine and tranny mounts made, oilpan on the ka modified, cross member notched(in case I ever want to put a sr in there and to give me a little more room) and I've started on body work.

It's gonna be along and painful road for me with two young children and a wife but I have vowed to the Datsun gods that I will bring this beast back into its beauty. I suck at remembering to take pics so for the pic nazis I apologize in advance. I hope one or two of you have a good read though.

Cheers~Errol.

That must've been a very long drive. Have you ever driven a roadster? Taking your time means it'll be done right :)

So, not sure where Trail BC is but there might be some owners near you who can help you out. Maybe cut down the restoration hours to 5990 or so-

Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

Alex, yeah it was a log drive. 1600kms. Or for those of you in America around a thousand miles. Haha the things we do for free car parts. No I have never driven a roadster. I haven't even seen a running driving roadster in person. But I will take my time and it will te done right. I welded it my first patch panel today. Took about 2 hours but I gottet done.

Linda, there is a guy I chat with that's semi close (jmartin) but he is still 4 hours away. One day we will meet up and beers will be had. And I should update my signature line. I've already got a couple hundred hours in on it. So it's only like 5670 hours left. Haha.

Thanks for the constant motivation and inspiration to all.

Cheers~Errol.

So I finally got my motor mounts fanned and mounted up. But now I new isolators. But I have to say that it is so gratifying to finally see that motor in its final resting place at long last. Hoping to have it running by the end of febtober!!!

It's in reference to a will Ferrell Saturday night live skit. It's one of the many celebrity jeopardy skits. Good stuff. And February is the optimistic start date, October the realistic. Hahaha

Cheers.
