1970 2000 S15 SR20DE Swap

Post by burn8 »

Ok, here we go. I recently picked up a 1970 2000 from southern CA and have started down the road of doing a body off SR20 swap. I have never worked on a car other than changing a belt or oil and have no clue what I'm getting myself into but I love the look of these cars and can't wait to drive it.

So are you undertaking this activity yourself, or are you subcontracting it out?

The responsibility is all mine, but I have a friend/neighbor who worked as a Volvo mechanic and builds custom hot-rods (American classics). Between this forum and my friend I feel pretty confident that I'll have a drive-able car some time in the next 15 years.

That's great, and will make for a great build thread here.

Thanks for the link Alvin. I had seen this car before but didn't notice the dash swap. Ive already picked up my replacement parts for the flat dash. I'm also running out of room to store this stuff :-)

So is there a secret to removing the collapsible steering column? I dont want to force it if I may break something.

Thanks,

No secret. You want to leave it all in one peice? I took off the wheel, and ts switch, unplug the wires and eight bolts. It should slide off of the lower half of the shaft. The clamp on the steering box is a pita. But that doesn't need to come out to pull the column.
What sort of issue are you dealing with?

Thanks for your response. I'm getting ready to remove the body and have just removed the bolt that clamps down on the column. I just didn't want to pull on anything that would cause me a problem.
