why on the classifieds...

Post by alp »

is there only one page of posts? I don't ever show more then a single page of postings. Where do all the ads go after they are bumped from page one?

The ads automatically expire after 30 days

wow that doesn't give anyone much time to see the ads then. I have not seen that done on my other car sites. Oh well guess I have to check back in all the time. thanks

I think it's a great idea. Anyone is free to re-post I imagine if their thread is purged. Keeps the page fresh.

yes, but impossible to search for any parts unless someone posts them within 30 days. That doesn't give very much chance to selling your parts. I belong to a VW site that only purges over a long time and it is very benificial when searching for things. I would get tired on having to repost my stuff every 30 days and would just list it on my local craigslist instead.

I think the thread only gets purged if there aren't any posts for 30 days.

Why not change the expiration time to 90 days? 30 is awfully short.

I guess I'm in the minority. 311s.org is providing us with a 100% free way of selling and trading parts.
Reposting an advert every 30 days just isn't that hard to do. I'm happy to do it.

The alternative is some system of removing posts for SOLD items.
The problem is that people are lazy about going back to the post and marking it sold.

So for me, the current system is better. Keeps the forum database manageable, and puts the responsibility on the users; where it should be.

all the car sites I belong to are free to post classifieds. Yes people have to remove old ads for sure. If it is about managing the site then that is totally understandable also. I thought it was just odd because I haven't seen this done anywhere else. It makes finding parts, or selling them, difficult unless you are continously on the site.

As long as there is a post (bump) it stays up. Of note, rarely do parts last 30 days on this site!!
It is a way to manage the site, and I think it works pretty well.

I'm not here much... getting warmer, can get in the garage soon.
If the "bump" keeps it alive, then I can't see a reason to change. Not wading through a bunch of sold stuff is nice. Anyone serious about selling just needs a bump post, 2 mouse clicks and type 4 letters, not too tough

I look at work as they can't keep me busy enough. I have asked for over five years for more to do but they give me enough. So, I look at this site and play a lot of hearts.
