We fill later ones with liquid grease also. For some late boxes, we have drilled and tapped a hole to create a drain hole. We then fill the with this liquid grease. I do carry some of the seals and gaskets for both boxes. I have bearings for the later boxes. I still have some top threaded plastic plugs for the early boxes.

I got an answer from SuperLube, copied below. IT's a 150+ wt oil with PTFE.

I like that it's green and it's ok to eat.

Reviving an old thread because I ha very questions: how many bolts hold the steering box to the frame? I remove the two accessed from the side but the box won't budge. Does it lift up off the frame or is there a 3rd bolt I can't see? I just need to lift the box up enough to replace the steering arm (pitman arm?).

I don't mind when this happens... it reminded me to look back into getting steering box grease over the oil I have in there now, unless it's all leaked out, which is the point of getting the grease. So, I located the John Deere corn head grease people talk about AN102562 on Amazon, and will get it there unless a local JD dealer stocks it ($7.00 vs $20 with free shipping on Amazon).

So I'm ready to mount the pitman arm back on the steering box and I'm curious: I just set my steering wheel straight and mount the arm with the front arm forward and center with the shaft? I'm assuming the box is just rotating gears so there's no limitation until the arm is attached to the tie rods and wheels, correct?

For what it's worth, I got my pitman arm off by applying pressure with a pitman arm puller and then banging on the arm with a big hammer. The puller by itself wasn't strong enough.

There is a key on the splines so it only goes on one way.
