Whoo-hoo! it's home. I have my temporary plates until I get it inspected on Monday. I need to put some KMph stickers on the gauge because I have a hard time converting on the fly when a speed camera comes up. it was weird going 80mph in the slow lane lol. It's really nice on the small roads and my small garage is a good home for it.

oh you bet. Once I get it registered I'll start prepping for a tourist day. It'll be really fun with the new rear end in!

It drove great! It's very loud with the hard top and wind noise on the highway, but around town it's very nice

I will! once I buy a new side marker bulb. Swapped bulbs on it to verify a wire didn't come loose. If i don't find one tomorrow I'll order one online

So off of work today and with missing the 1st international Datsun meet I really wanted to drive my car before the week of rain. Met up with a buddy to go for a ride.
Actually my car behaved amazingly. I swapped back to the old rims and felt really confident instead of worrying about tires rubbing. the lemans offset is a little too aggressive with the meaty tires which is a bummer, but might be a project later (straightening the body on the frame with some gentle rolling)
Had to jump his motorcycle, car Idled fine the whole time which was a surprise, Thinking about it I'll try throwing on my new intake seals and give the insulators a check for cracks to see if maybe an intake leak is causing the idle to go up/down. I've already been going though the linkages a few time and the throttle cable with no luck. Any ways here's the Pics from the day: Warning! dirty car, didn't have time to wash it after getting it home from the shippers. and yes I'm rolling around with only half the side trim on! :lol: my schedule was that tight to get it over here.
Found a few good places to pull over. All within 5 mins from my house! I might buy a real camera, but i think these are pretty good for a cheap phone!

Good stuff Alex, what great adventure you are on! Hopefully you will manage to get to most of the country’s in Western Europe over the next few years. I am extremely jealous of you. For sure get a better camera and let the rest of us live through your adventures. And Germany has a lot of great beers to explore as well.

Not yet. I still would if someone knows a quality one. Most of the ones I looked at with the right flow seemed not very sturdy. I'm still working on getting through inspection. everything is great, just fiddling with the right drum brake adjustment. Hopefully it'll be done tomorrow.

Alright! time to get back at it. The car drives great. But unfortunately it failed inspection over and over (7x) for a rear brake imbalance. So here's what I did before getting burnt out and taking a break:
Right rear brake low in tests. ok no problem
The test consists of them pulling forward and slamming the brakes on their tester (which my car barely fits) every time same reading with e-brake and regular braking. So adjustment or brake failing.


1. adjusted both sides evenly (did this a few times and did the following to make sure it was right.) Also tried orientating the brake shoe the wrong way to see if I had it wrong on one occasion.
adjusted to both sides dragging the same amount. then backed them off 3 turns. I made sure to pump the brake a few times with the drum on to ensure the shoes were aligned. and rechecked adjustment. both sides felt the same and I was definitely unable to turn them with the e brake applied.
2. after a few tries loosened Left side to make it pass the test: no change right side barely reading
3. Ok maybe it's leaking or has an air bubble or small leak and fortunately I have a newer rear end with newer parts. So I swapped the entire right side with the new stuff, drum, cylinder, and shoes. then re accomplished adjusting after fresh fluid and the most careful bleed job.
Better but still right side too low, but better. and that's where I had to stop.

The car brakes better than ever and I can slam on the brakes without touching the steering wheel, just stays straight.
Now I think there must be something with that right side, maybe the connections are going bad to the cylinder? I've been wanting to learn how to do brake lines and could remake them over winter. Or is there something I'm missing? It's a 30min drive to the inspectors on base (inspections free(for me) which is why I was able to try again and again.) so the brakes could be different warm? or a proportioner between the left and right? Any ideas or questions appreciated! If I'm on the right track I might just try adjusting the left side looser now that the right is closer and trying again before going crazy.

On a side not I also stopped because the car started making a bad noise up front, so I immediately assumed the chain was going. but it was just the cheap alternator(took the belt off) so I'll be ordering a nice one and finally moving it to the passenger side. I'm so glad that was it. I took the inspection cover off and everything looks great. I can get temp plates and retry again as many times as I want, and everything else passed great!

Wow, those European's really take their inspections seriously! I knew they were more thorough than here in the States, but that seems excessive. Could you get away with putting some extra weight in the right side of the trunk? Here in Oklahoma the only thing they check is...well, nothing! You can drive any piece of crap that will go down the road. While I'm not a big fan of government intrusion, I do feel the need for at least rudimentary safety regulations. Keep trying, I'm sure you'll figure it out.
