Project "Drag 2000"

Project "Drag 2000" is finally underway....

Plans are simple, BRUTE power and response.

Engine: Sr20"VE"T ; looking to make 500whp on pump gas, 650 whp on C16
Driveline: Will be either a z32 5spd or a considering a Ford C4 auto, with a ford 8.8 rear end

I will be using a Spriso engine mount kit and brake kit. I have many parts already for this project I will post more pics. I just thought i'd get the thread started.

Does anyone have any idea what coil springs those are in my pics? I haven't really looked at them, but they are yellow...hmm, maybe i'll pull one off and clean it up and measure it. Anyways, like i said this is just a teaser, it will be a long drawn out project. stay tuned....

I can't wait to follow along. What is the difference between an SR20 DET and a VET?

I will be using the Sr20det, but swaping the head off of a Sr20ve N/A motor, the head is far superior to the det head....its a completely different animal and flow is awesome. and it is shimless instead of the hydro style of the det head. They can rev upwards of 9500k.... :smt003

You're going to need some serious tread on the rear to keep that thing from drifting all over. What size wheels are you planning? Can't wait to see this come to fruition.

Wheels will be ssr professor sp1 16x8 front and 16x9 rear.... 255-50-16 Mickey Thompson drag radial. The rear will have z fender flares.

I take it you can roll the chassis out from the body. What's the distance from the ground to the top of the driver's door?

Sounds like an excellent project-- we have always wanted to do a VE head swap on one of our cars!

I have motor mount kits in stock when you are ready!

Yes, the VE head is where its at! Mazworx had a bone stock sr20det bottem end with a bone stock ve head swap , with a gt3076 on 18psi made 476whp :shock:

Which version of the VE head are you using? It is a straight "bolt on" or...?

I meant to get you a measurement this weekend but i was busy gettin the M45 ready for IFO, i will check this afternoon when i get off work. OH and yes, it is on casters.

What does Neo VVL stand for?
Nissan Ecology Orientated Variable Valve Lift and Timing

The VE (Neo VVL) series of engines is Nissan's answer to Honda's VTEC. The two systems are nearly identical. They use the same concept of multiple cam lobes to provide a low rpm cam ideal for torque and a high rpm cam optimized for hp. The only difference in the Nissan system is that the intake and exhaust cams are triggered indepedently for a flatter, more consistent power band. You can read more about the VTEC system here.

How many different VE motors are there?
There are five (5) VE motors.
SR16VE - 173hp 5 speed Manual 97-2001
SR16VE N1 - 197hp 5 speed Manual 97-98
SR20VE - 187hp CVT 6 speed Auto 97-2001
SR20VE - 204hp 6 speed Manual 2001-Present
SR20VET - 276hp AWD Turbo 2002-Present

How much power does the VE have?
SR16VE - 173hp @ 7800rpm / 119lb torque @ 7200rpm
SR16VE N1 - 197hp @ 7800rpm / 134lb torque @ 7600rpm
SR20VE - 187hp @ 7000rpm / 145lb torque @ 6000rpm
SR20VET - 276hp @ 6400rpm / 228lb torque @ 3200rpm

How much do they cost?
SR16VE - $1000-$1600
SR16VE N1 - $3000+ good luck finding one*
SR20VE - $1000-$2500
SR20VET - unknown
*Only 500 of these engines are thought to have been produced.

What are the origins of these motors?
SR16VE - 1.6L VVL motor found in the Nissan Sunny Lucino VZ-R, Sunny GT and Pulsar VZ-R.
SR16VE N1 - 1.6L VVL motor found in the Nissan Pulsar VZ-R N1 and Pulsar VZ-R N1 SSS.
SR20VE - 2.0L VVL motor found in the Nissan Primera (Infiniti G20 bodystyle), Bluebird, Wingroad, and Autobacs Garaiya.
SR20VET - 2.0L turbocharged VVL motor found in the Nissan X-Trail SUV, and Trailrunner Concept Car.

still taking her apart and starting to cut out some rust...I also got the windshield and dash removed...fun stuff...

This will really be fun to watch! Please do keep us updated. I'll never be able to do something like this, but I will get to enjoy it through you! Very cool!

Thanks for all the info on the Nissan motors. It is truly amazing how far the internal combustion engine has come. Even a fully race built U20 would be no match against even the smallest of those motors normally aspirated, and surely not nearly as reliable. I love my '67 2000, but some day I may do something different engine wise with the '68 sitting on the side of the house... waiting...
