That crack is going to be a pain, but there are solutions. Hopefully that one gets solved easily... as far as the carb sticking, these are SUs yes? Ive read that they can get "sticky" and it sounds like whats happening, but I have no experience to suggest how to fix it

Bracket? I heard jb weld will not hold up to the heat. That’s why I went with “liquid steelâ€. Meant for manifolds and up to 2400 degrees.

Contemplated taking it all apart to repair it. Don’t know how I missed it when I assembled it years ago. I decide to try some “liquid metal†before tearing parts off the engine. It says it’s good to 2400 degrees and meant for cracks in manifolds and other things, so I gave it a try. It’s curing now.
Checked the timing. It checks out just right so now I have to figure out the noise I hear. It sounds like a diesel nock. It happens at low rpms when the engine’s under load. I thought it might have been pre-ignition. Happens when Accelerating hard. It does not sound like an actual engine nock. What could that be?

Good idea. I’m using new gas. Ethanol free 89. The gas station may be suspect but they were the only place around to have ethanol free. I’ll try some 93 the next time I go out.
I probably don’t have that bracket on. I need to look and see.
Carbs - when cold it drops down. At running temp it likes to stay high. I’ll check stops, bones, and cables. Thanks

Matt, My manifold bracket looked a little deteriorated and I didn't trust it so I just fabbed one up out of scrap steel. My 1600 has domed pistons and the head needed a little shaving so I started mine off off with 92. It still knocked a little, and what you are describing sounds EXACTLY like pre-ignition knock, so I backed my timing off 3 degrees and now it won't do it unless I push it fairly hard a low RPMs.

I have the exhaust manifold bracket installed but not bolted to the manifold . I’ll have to add the missing bolt.

Well the rain has kept me from working on the timing some more so I got back to working on the exterior trim. Wet sanded, polished, buffed, and installed the passenger side. Looking good.

Great weather today so I rushed to get the rest of the trim done. I drained the gas tank, filled it with 93, and took a little timing out of it. The engine knocking is now gone. The high idle is still there. If I snap the throttle it will return to the low idle but if I’m driving and shifting it won’t. I have to snap the throttle to get it to drop back down. Anyway, that’s for another time. How about some pictures of the completed outside of the car?
