True. There's info about the stock brakes and converting them to something else, but nothing about "How to rebuild Datsun Roadster front brake calipers." Sounds like what you really want are How To articles, kinda like what Pelican Parts has for Porsche 914's:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/914tech_articles.htm

Here's one specifically for 914 calipers:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticle ... ebuild.htm

Good idea, but it still requires someone to write the article(s). You're thinking people will use the Wiki to group write the article. I dunno....

I think the section can come together when people group write the information. We can start with the basic info on the tech section here. If someone feels the need to add more they just edit the information. Late last week I did the Body section, which is more along the lines of what the content will look like.

The only downside I see to the format is the ability of everyone to edit the page. There are various ways to do things, and if I decide the way it is currently written is wrong and edit it out and put in my own opinion, right or wrong, the old content is lost.

I would prefer to take the current tech section, split it up among volunteers who want to edit and update a section they have knowlege of and then repost it. For example, the parts interchange list has alot of good info in an ad hoc layout that could be improved and added to. I did a quick Word doc on the Chevy trans mount install , that I can't find a copy of, which could be proofread by someone familiar with the components and then posted. Alot of info could be trolled out of the forums too. The index would be the hard part.

I volunteer my time and my Wife's typing skills.

Divide and conquer, then get together and order pizza and beer.

What??!! You lost it again? I don't know if I should send you another copy or not.

Yup, I agree. Even if you're not an expert, you can still mine the data from the forum posts, then have others provide feedback and corrections.

Well, I might have lost it... I'll look again. Hey, I do have it!! My main computer had a meltdown, have to reload from scratch. Had to "find" a copy of XP Pro first, and backing up was a nightmare when it would crash randomly. I'm limping on the laptop now.

I think the tech section update would be a fun group project, take some load of off Steve's shoulders.

How hard is it to convert from Word to HTML, easy if I recall, as long as you save it as an HTML, right?

RE:Update Tech Section

Post by S Allen »

Damn, I am excited to hear there are others that may take on a project to glean info from the forum. I can convert word. text or any thing else you might throw at me and add it to the tech section. Any ideas for restructuring are welcome as well. I will be back from vacation next Monday. You guys can start any time. I have some catching up to do on the registry as well.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. The resulting HTML is bloated garbage that is near impossible to edit -- even worse than early versions of FrontPage.

I would just provide Steve the document and let him do the HTML. Speaking of that, is it time to upgrade the look, move off from frames and/or upgrade to style sheets? Yeah, yeah, content first, but just wondering...

RE:Updates

Yes, word docs or text files are far easier to work with than word or Frontpage generated html files. CSS(Cascading style sheets) is something I have planned on doing for a few years now. I would still like to someday eventually have the Roadster Regsitry Database driven as well. So much to do with so little time. 8)

OK, I thought there might be ALOT lost in the translation. Remember, my computer learning curve dips severely at Win3.11 and drops like a stone at 98. What ever happened to DOS 5.0?... I need a good game of "Gorilla" :D

I would guess the best way would be to divide up the existing content by the volunteers individual skills, let the graphics guys do the heavy graphics stuff, and others edit what they know. Some organization might be good so 5 people don't decide to spruce up the same article. I think Stickerman had offered some web hosting space a while ago, don't know if it's still available?

The WIKI format might be nice to use as an editing tool, and to build future tech articles as people can colaberate at different times. I'm way behind the times on the software, but as long as there is speel chekc, I'm OK.

I finally got rid of my shrink wrapped copy of IBM PC-DOS 5.0 on 5-1/4 inch floppies only last month!

Of course, I still have WordStar 3.3 and several other goodies on 5-1/4...just in case, hehehehe...

It's funny, I've heard people are using 5 1/4" floppys for "security" now, nobody has a drive to read them. :D
