There are shims installed already. Im just wondering if I should add a slightly thicker one or is a .013 difference between the two sides inconsequential?

That is inconsequential, but you could add or subtract shims as needed to make them exactly the same but I would bet that the next time you drove the car the pad difference would change. Mostly the pads are pushed back into the caliper by the run-out of the rotor. The run-out is dependent on the rotor, the bearing, and the load from turning. I don't think they would be the same any two times in a row.

That's what I was thinking but as a novice thought I would get a second (smarter) opinion. While I was in there today, completely dis assembled the caliper assembly, checked pads (again) for clearance and sanded the edges a bit more for good measure. Also sanded off the glaze on the contact surface from overheating. Removed all surface rust, dirt and grime from every surface. Wanted to make sure that nothing was preventing free movement of the pads.

Congrats for hanging in there. Sometimes I find it useful to take a break and do some cosmetic project, polish, paint etc and then come back around to the job that has me frustrated.

Hang in there!
An idea to confirm that the piston is retracting enough would be to cut a dowel the length from the washer to the end of the seal.
Install a drill in the port from the reservoir to the piston cylinder. Confirm that the dowel, washer and clip fit with some clearance. I think an 1/8" would be amount the correct amount, but I have not measure this before.

I have a new master on order. I have determined that the old master had metric threads and the P.O. changed out the brake line fittings on the master cylinder end to metric. I will need to change them back to SAE fittings for the new master but don't want to replace the entire brake lines. I would rather just replace the fittings on the existing lines. I have a pipe flaring tool so that I can accomplish this. My problem is that I cannot source the SAE fittings down here in my tiny little Mexican town. I see that a few of the vendors sell new brake lines but have not seen any vendors that just offer the fittings. Anybody know where I can source them? Fits 3/16 line. 3/8 X24 fitting.3/4 inch in length.

Here is a nice video someone posted on the Tech Wiki about the Datsun 510 master, including the adapter and push rod info.
picture is worth a 1000 words. Never knew this existed.

You should be able to buy a premade universal steel line with 3/8 SAE fittings for less the $10. Just cut the line and remove the fittings.
If there is a wreaking yard in your town, most "American" cars before 1980 would have SAE brake line fittings. Check with your local brake shops also.

Thanks for the info Linda but i'm going away from a metric master cylinder to a SAE master. Thus the need to source the correct SAE fittings for the brake lines.FJ20, Keep in mind, I am 800 miles south of the border in a little fishing village of about 18000 people. I have hit all the little parts houses but the inventories leave a lot to be desired. Although several had generic steel lines in stock, they all turned out to be metric part numbers.

Are you 100% sure that the PO changed the fittings as its possible to swap the metal fitting in the master cylinder with the SAE version from the original master cylinder.

FJ20, I'm fairly certain as the hex nut is a 10 mm as opposed to a 7/16,

]Thanks Mike. It may not come to that. I think ive finally convinced the vendor that im buying the master cylinder from to send the proper fittings when he ships me the master. For some reason, he was initially reluctant to do so. All I can figure is that he didn't have them in inventory and didn't want the additional hassle to aquire them. In the meantime......

Now is a great time to add the brake firewall brace if you don't have it already!
