Radiator & Shroud – Early SPL SRL Compatability

Post by iloveredmeat »

Hi All,

Looking at part numbers, it seems that a 67.5 radiator and shroud from a 1.6L will not work with a 67.5 2L.

Is this true?

Thank you,
Peter

Yes it is a no go but with care it could be cut down to fit, as the 2 liter one is not as deep. It will not look perfectly correct but it will fit and function properly if you cut it down. You would also need the top tank from a 2 liter radiator.

...or you can DIY: -

Prototype under construction using 1.2mm aluminium sheet.

Prototype fitted to radiator and car.

Final version under construction. I increased the width of the top fan guard to match the OEM shroud width.

Painted and final fitment. Fan has the same clearance to this shroud as it did with the OEM shroud, about 12-15mm.

Click on the image and it magically turns around the correct way

Very noticeable improvement when driving.
The electric booster fan rarely comes on now, even after switching off the car and with heat soak happening :D

WOW! Very impressive!

You should maybe post this in the Tech Wiki.

I don't have a 2000, so this isn't for me, but your work is inspiring!

I'll be selling a 'tested, painted, and ready-to-go' radiator, so I wanted to make sure I put out the correct information when I do.

Thanks,
Pm

It is fitted to a G15 not the U20.
I didn't use pop rivets because I needed it to be able to be partially dismantled for installation and removal.
It is held together with stainless fasteners.
Snug it is, but the full air shroud makes the fan so much more efficient :D
