Hello from So. GA

Post by Stick »

Just a quick hello for first post ... just picking up a 1969 SRL311 from my father. Excited to learn a bit more about this car and enjoy the journey of owning, working on and maintaining a 50 yr old vehicle... not my first, but first Datsun.
It's going to need a little transmission work but generally in good shape ... My father did a pretty good amount of work to it and keeps his cars in good order.
Looking forward to sharing some pictures once I pick it up, but mostly appreciate the vast knowledge of enthusiasts out there .. Lots to learn

Cheers!

Hello Stick,

I live in Marietta, Ga. but grew up in Moultrie. Are you near there? I have a 70' SRL and working on a 67.5' Sr20 swap. Still have a few parts so let me know if you need something. Welcome to the group.

Enjoying this site and the people more every day. I'm in Savannah. My son lives up in Sandy Springs ... I'm sure I'll be up in the ATL area occasionally!

I saw somewhere there will also be a meet up in Tampa next year some time ... hoping to meet some folks along the way. Prior to any "big" road trips I'm going to need a 5th gear ... I'm told the 5th gear was a press fit that has come loose and only have 4 gears right now. My father was talking to a guy out west (Les?) who would swap core with a rebuild, but I'd like to keep all of the numbers matching an original at this point... That will be a decision for later once I get my hands on it and assess things further.

IMHO, much much more important to have a solid trans than to be concerned about numbers matching, especially on the trans... I don't think any future owner will give a rats tail end vs knowing the box is good. They are a great trans but parts are becoming harder to find and thusly more expensive, so get one that's solid and be a happy owner!

Stick, I'm in Savannah (Georgetown). We also have another member who lives in Savannah and Sid drops by whenever he's in the area. I have gone through several Roadsters and have lots of parts (i don't keep high windshield cars), but most mechanicals are easy to work on. I need to complete my frame off (paint), but I've been moving everything to my new shop as the wife wanted the garage back. Let me know if you need anything or want to talk Roadsters.

I've done a couple 5 speeds as well (see resto site). JT just outside of ATL has welded 5th gears. Other vendors have the splined gear. A rebuild can get pricey quick. If you want to use a 4 speed while you rebuild the 5 speed so you can drive I have plenty of those.

Buddy, thanks for reaching out .... It would be great to meet you and some others in the area ... I have a LOT to learn.

I just got the car home on Sunday evening after seeing it for the first time and I love it. It is in pretty good shape, but there are some minor leaks I need to investigate. It came with multiple boxes of old and some new parts that I need to sift through, second set of wheels, new top and roll bar (which I am considering removing to create more seat room).

Looking forward to meeting you and talk roadsters... I'll shoot you a PM with my contact info.

If you want to part with the roll bar, I could use one.

I'll keep that in mind. I looked at removing it and it's pretty simple in theory, however, when my dad had it installed the guy welded the nuts (tacked) so they didn't loosen. Now it looks like the only way to remove it would be cutting the bolts. Again sounds simple .... but there's no good way to even get a Dremel with a cut off wheel to the back bolts. I'll just need to get some more time to figure out plan B and get it out. It also has a set of Jegs 4 pt harnesss installed. It's all brand new ... installed this year

Once I get the time to get it out I'll let you know.
