1600 Plug at Back of Head

Post by Curtis »

Has anyone ever removed the plug at the back of the head? Does it come out fairly easy?

Why would you want or need to? Isn't that just a hole from the manufacturing process?
My junk pile:
71 Jeep Gladiator. Restored w/#s matching engine. My WeeBeasty
70 1600 legit 2nd owner. Stroked and bored
Several salvaged w access to a barn full of parts, part cars & whole cars
......What's in the barn is for sale. What do you need?

I have removed them before, it’s best done in the car as it’s very hard to hold the head from moving on the bench when taking the plug out. But yes it has been done by me before.

Learn something new every day! I didn’t know that was possible. Must be a bugger to get the new one in.

I had to look at the Japanese manual for 1968 listed in the wiki to find a drawing of it. All other manuals show the expansion plug.

It helped get the sand / wax core out easier, but I think it could take a elect.heater coil for extreme cold areas too

Tried the proper size socket on it today. It doesn't budge. Put a 5 or so foot pipe on the breaker bar and no luck. Impact gun I have is not heavy duty enough and that will just beat the crap out of it.

So it looks like aluminum paint. The amount of pulling or pushing this requires will give me an aneurysm.
