Not sure what you are referring to, but I wouldn't put power to it. If you are trying to check the sender then hook a ground wire to the body of the sender (not the housing and not the end of it where the wire screws in but the body) and see if the gauge works then when the engine warms. Or I think you can ground the wire that screws to the sender and the guage should peg I believe.

test the sender for continuity - then put it in water and heat it up and recheck- take it out and recheck continuity

I have a '70 1600 roadster. Everything works but the temp gauge. I don't even see a temp sensor. Or a wire for one.

Your temp sender should be driver side front of the head right under the line that goes to your intake manifold.
and there should be a yellow with white stripe wire going to it, it may come across the front of the engine from the passenger side. At least that is how it is on my 67.5.
