One of my best buddies, whom passed from mesothelioma 13 years back, had a 1969 1600 from about 1979 to 1984. His Cali. plate read "PRE 240Z" or was it "PRE Z" ?? anyway....... He was a great car guy, race fan. He put in a number years working at the local gas station along with myself and about six other buddies back in the late 70's. His death was attributed to asbestos exposure by way of helping with the disassembly of Break drums and rotors at the Station. His Wife was taken care of as part of the Asbestos settlement. We were all exposed and I won't be surprised if the other shoe drops on one of us as well.

My nod to the roadster being Datsun’s “real” sports car.
P.S. rare glimpse of my top, as that’s the only time it has been up!

New 1600 owner but lifelong license plate collector. Needless to say I love this thread. If I ever get a DMV appointment, I’ll be registering the plates shown as YOM. The number is clear. I only wish my car had been built in September of 1968, but I don’t think it was.

Sometimes the factory original seat belt labels can help you place the date, at least "no earlier than." You also could extrapolate from the serial number database. Those old Virginia tags were simple but very clear now as YOM tags. The state would switch black/white each year so the police could easily catch the expired. These days, not being reflectorized, it's tougher for police to catch you with laser-based speed detectors.

Congratulations on your newly acquired 1600, by the way. Hope to see you around. I may bring mine into DC some day before it gets too cold out. So many coronavirus absences that traffic is down and parking spaces are open.

Technically not a “license“ plate.... but I saw this on the back of a Datsun pickup and couldn’t get it out of my head. Had a custom “vanity” plate made. 🤣

I think the plate is cool but most people say, what does that mean?
